Two of my favourite warbirds joined by one of the best looking fast jet types to have graced the skies…

thesuffolkspitfire and Lilham Aviation marking history and making history in a single flight.

Could equally special things be on the horizon in 2026? Time will tell…

Timings may flex if external factors play a part!

A big engineering team readying the aircraft this evening, with Air Traffic Control and Operations staff poised to help get the Chinook away in the morning, both at Benson and RAF Odiham Official, which will be providing another Chinook to land at the national event in Aldershot.

Our primary aircraft from Benson is expected to be ZD983…and the last time I took her to Folkestone with another great crew in 2018 was pretty special…

To all those going out - thank you and enjoy the day! 🇬🇧

A real bucket list aeroplane this one - not at all what it seems…

Ultimate Warbird Flights operate this stunning Lockheed 12A Electra Junior, which is a symbol of a bygone era in aviation. Built in 1936, G-AFTL may look like its role was purely luxurious transport, but in reality it hides a shady story of photo-reconnaissance and a contribution to the Allied war efforts of the 1940s.

The aircraft’s owner was owned by Frederick Sidney Cotton - a veteran of the First World War and developer of the ‘Sidcot’ suit…a flying outfit which went on to keep UK military pilots warm in the cockpit and which was used by the RAF until the 1950s.

Leading a very colourful life, post-war Cotton went on to purchase the rights to sell a French colour photographic film called Dufaycolor. A pioneer of airborne photography, his endeavours led him to travel all over Europe and the wider world. As World War II began to loom in the late-1930s, Cotton was approached by the Deuxième Bureau (French Intelligence) and later the British equivalent - MI6.

Sidney Cotton went on to modify G-AFTL for covert aerial photography and in civilian guise, overflew and surreptitiously photographed many German and Italian military installations during the months preceding World War II. His co-pilot on these spy flights was R.H. Niven, a Canadian serving in the Royal Air Force. Underneath the aeroplane were three F24 cameras, concealed behind sliding doors which opened to capture imagery when triggered by a button beneath the pilot’s seat. Another Leica camera was installed within the wing. Cotton often took additional risk by flying somewhat off-track from his flight plans, conveniently straying closer to German military installations! Years later the RAF utilised modified Pembroke C(PR).1 aircraft equipped in much the same fashion, to conduct clandestine, low-level photo-reconnaissance missions during the Cold War.

G-AFTL completed its first post restoration flight from Sywell Aerodrome on March 27, 2023 and what an honour it was to share the skies with it last week. Never judge a book by its cover… 🕵️

Back in the air for the new season - and what a way to start with a bit of JJ!

Amazing to think you can actually fly in the back of ‘Jersey Jerk’ via Ultimate Warbird Flights, as it has an additional seat! An amazing team of people keeping heritage alive and beautiful machines like this in the air.

Some really exciting potential ahead this year - possibly showing the work of more aviation professionals who hope to inspire new generations. It’s been a painful few weeks after recent events but I look forward to some positivity in the world of aviation and smiles on faces as the Centre of Aviation Photography make it possible for a select few to fly on sorties such as this. If you want to be there then give the team a shout and turn dreams into reality.

Tipping in 🇧🇪

I don’t think I could ever tire of shooting the Viper in its natural habitat. Especially when in the hands of some of the best pilots in the world. The F-16 remains one of those aircraft that just looks right…would you agree?

Still pinching myself over flying with this beautiful P-40F of the last year. Brian Smith, making it look easy at the controls.

Thank you to the wonderful team of people who tirelessly keep these important and exquisite machines flying and who placed trust in our team by being part of this moment. Forever grateful.
