Say Mamiya to most film shooters and they picture medium format. Say NC1000S and most of them will ask what that is. It is a fully manual 35mm SLR from a short run in the late seventies, paired here with a proper 50mm f/1.7, and it might be the most interesting camera in stock that nobody asks for.

Not a first camera. A genuinely rewarding second or third one, once you are ready to set exposure by eye and enjoy it.

Curious how it handles. Swipe through, then DM us if you want to know more before it finds a new home.

Our test for a good travel kit is simple: could you explain every item in under a minute. Here is what is actually going in the bag this weekend. An Olympus mju:-II for the days you want to disappear into the background, a Canon EOS 500 for the days you want a say in the shot, and five rolls picked for very different kinds of light.

One of the five is expired Kodak Gold, in purely for the experiment, and another is a hand-rolled canister of This Is How I Roll 50D, respooled from Kodak's new remjet-free Vision3 50D, so a normal lab can process it without the usual cinema-film hassle.

Building your own version for a trip of your own. DMs are open, or start browsing at the link in bio.

Everyone keeps asking us for a digicam, so here is one of our favourites, and every photo in this post was shot on it. The Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS is a slim 2009 pocket compact with a CCD sensor, which is the bit that matters. It gives you punchy colour, a touch of grain and that honest, flash-lit character your phone spends all its processing trying to remove.

No settings to learn, you point, shoot and it does the rest. If you have been curious about the digicam thing, this is a lovely and easy place to start. DMs open if you want a hand picking one.

Every manual camera ever made runs on the same five controls.

Aperture, shutter speed, film speed, focus and the meter. Swipe through once and the dials stop being intimidating. Save it for the day your first camera arrives, it reads better with the real thing in your hands.

Once you can set these five without thinking, the rest of film photography is taste. When you are ready for the camera itself, the beginner-friendly shelf lives at vintagecamerahut.com, and a DM gets you a recommendation matched to what you want to shoot.
