Submersion (2020)

Submersion (2020) is based on the coronavirus pandemic. Documenting the history and visually documenting my personal feelings towards the pandemic.

With inspiration from John Everett Millais’ Ophelia (1851–52) and the portrail of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. I created a visual response using water; representing the feeling of entrapment and the drowning within my own emotion. The use of green lighting allowed me to juxtapose the represntation of those feelings but also represent the growth of nature that began to happen during the months of lockdown and the growth in society.

Although there was growth, there was plenty of pain. The Black Lives Matter movement and loss of lives was also an important subject to incorportate into this project due to my own belief’s, feelings and personal experiences attached.

Sculpting a Goddess (2022) modernizes the ideology of Greek goddesses. Typically, goddesses are presented as tall, thin, angular women in art and literature. The portrait- based project explores artworks primarily from the neoclassical period based on Greek myths and re-enacts the personas of the goddesses. Using ‘ordinary’ women from diverse backgrounds and with different body types, the project challenges the usual portrayal of the ‘goddesses.’ The project aims to challenge each individual artwork and myth by taking the poses that are usually looking away from any male in the painting/sculpture or away from the artist and making the model look straight into the camera. The project allows the women/goddesses to take back their stories rather than being the damsel in distress.

Submersion

Based on the first lockdown and how it made me feel like I was drowning. With cultural references to Shakespeare’s Ophelia from Hamlet I was able to represent the madness and chaos that I felt like I was going through at the time.

The Forbidden Fruit

This project is based on the female reproductive system and how it can be looked upon in Christianity. It is important to recognise that periods are normal and all women are beautiful.
