A glimpse into Maasai life

The Maasai live mainly in northern Tanzania and southern Kenya, around the Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Red is a defining color of their traditional clothing, associated with strength, courage and protection

Their society is organized into age groups, with young warriors, known as morans, representing an important stage in a man’s life

Maasai women traditionally build their homes, known as enkaji, using branches, mud and cattle dung

Traditionally, they are herders, cattle and goats are an important part of their lives

Maasai men have traditionally been responsible for protecting their families and herds

Rain and water largely determine where their herds can survive and move

The Maasai don’t simply live next to the wildlife of the Serengeti. They live within the same ecosystem, sharing the land and water with the wild animals around them

When a new male coalition takes over a pride, males may kill the previous males’ cubs 🥲 bringing the females back into oestrus sooner and allowing them to father their own offspring.

A male coalition needs to hold a pride for around two years to have a good chance of raising its cubs to independence
