This week is Salt Awareness Week - Mind them Arteries!

More difficult to shoot this than I first thought.
Firstly to get the spoon front edge and all of the salt into focus and at f/8 I would have needed to focus stack, as the depth of field is only 3mm. I wanted this in one shot if possible. So I needed to stop down to f/16 which makes things really dark.

Secondly was the light. This was shot with a single flash at camera left in a gridded strip softbox. I used a standard studio strobe at first but the flash duration was too long and the falling salt had too much movement and was just a blur.
So I used my high speed studio strobe and I had the same issue. Because I was shooting at f/16 I needed to increase the strobe power, which in turn makes the flash duration quite long.

Following?

OK, so I finally ended up shooting with a Speedlight, also on low power, so I needed to increase my ISO to 500 to compensate.

Another one for Steak and Kidney Pie all the way from ... Tesco

Shot this one with a video light, which I don't normally do as I prefer strobe. Side lit from the right with a 180cm softbox and a white board on the left for some bounce light.

It's Valentine's Day! What more could you want than a heart shaped waffle and strawberries falling into a chocolate filled bath!

This was so fun to shoot, and a bit of a mess. The trick to super sharp splash is a high speed strobe with a very short flash duration.
Studio strobe to camera left set at around 1/3800 sec fired through a 60x90cm softbox.

Sardines without heads. Sardines without tails. They aren't glamourous but neither would you be stuck in a tin.
But they do taste nice on toast. What's your go to tinned sardine favourite?
