Skomer Island Puffins.

It is always a privilege to witness the arrival of puffins on Skomer Island. If you want to see these fabulous birds you need to book around December for a slot in May or June as the tickets book up quickly.

These were taken with a 100-400mm lens on a Nikon Z6 and a 35-150mm lens on a Nikon Zf but as the puffins aren't shy you could use a much smaller focal length.

We were too early to see the birds with sand eels this time around as the pufflings had not yet hatched so a couple of weeks later may have been better.

Plas Newydd, Llangollen.

Evening shot of this iconic North Wales location. The house, famously, was the home of Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby who are known as the Ladies of Llangollen. If anyone would like information of their story there is a link below.

The light falls nice on Castell Dinas BrĂ¢n and on Plas Newydd early evening during April and the gates are open until dusk so it is well worth the visit. We zoomed in to 43mm to try to compress the castle and the house.

Camera settings: Nikon Z7, Nikkor 24-120mm lens at 43mm, ISO 64 f/7.1, 1/30 sec

Waterfall Photography.

How long do you expose when shooting a waterfall? It is down to individual preference of course depending on how you like the water to look so there is no right or wrong answer. We generally start at a half of a second and see how it looks then fine tune the settings. Half a second will usually give the water definition rather than the milky texture that a longer exposure would give. These images, taken in Scotland recently each use around a half of a second. Locations in the comments of each image - hope you like them.

Eilean Donan Castle, Highlands

Well, if you have been following the page you may know that we had a few problems with the images we took while in the Scottish Highlands. Our electronic passport that we used to store our images had a knock and stopped working but after sending it off to a company in Norfolk most, if not all, of the information has been saved.

So, our cottage was a fifteen minute drive from Eilean Donan Castle and it's not a location you can ignore when passing so we ended up with quite a few different images. Hope you like them.

One Last Image (perhaps)

This may be the final image post from our holiday to Scotland due to a technical breakdown. Our laptop's hard drive doesn't have a lot of free space so we have been using an electronic passport to store the images. However after using it for twelve days our passport had a knock against a table and no longer works. We have sent it off to an electronic expert in Norfolk who will try to retrieve the data. Fingers crossed!

Anyway, we passed through Glencoe on our way home and we shot this classic location.

Camera settings: Nikon Z7, Nikkor 24-120mm lens at 28mm, ISO 80, f/8, 1/30 sec.

The Needle, Isle of Skye

This is one of Skye's classic locations and it is popular for a reason. Sitting watching the sun rise at this location and see the landscape light up is truly a wonder to behold. This particular image was taken just before the sun rose. The Needle is a staggering 120 foot high.

Camera settings: Nikon Z6, Nikkor 14-30mm f/4. ISO 100, f/4, 1/8 second.
