This shot was taken at the Liverpool waterfront during the Ice Festival back in 2017. By then we’d already moved to the hills of North Wales, but I felt the pull to return to my favourite place — the waterfront. I needed to hear the familiar accent, the humour only Scousers share and endure, and to feel at home again.
Ten years on, that need hasn’t faded. I still find myself drawn back now and then, to walk the waterfront I grew up loving, to listen to those familiar voices and laughter, and to remember where my heart belongs.

Of Ancestors

I walk these dark streets, shadowed and worn,
With ancestors all around—
I can reach beyond and touch their thoughts of old
Their breath now wind between the stones,
Their echoes caught between timbers, now prone.

These walls, now weathered and time-struck,
Once knew their footsteps, voices, griefs—
A cradle of whispered remembrance
Where the living and the gone still meet.

I reach beyond the quiet breach,
And feel the flicker of their minds—
Familiar souls now stilled and cold,
Yet pulsing faintly in the air I breathe.

Old customs rise like morning mist:
A song at dusk, an embered tale,
Rituals of hearth and hand
Passed to me through blood and stone.

They are not forgotten.
Not while my feet trace paths they carved.
Not while my heart quickens
As I approach to, their homes and what was once there hearths

For I have walked where they once stood—
Stone by stone, life by life—
And in that sacred act,
They live again.

My girl, Ylva, drying off in the sun after a good run, race, and tumble with Fáelán on our hill.
Her full name is Ylva Blá Feldr, which roughly translates as 'Blue-Cloaked She-Wolf,' but maybe I should have called her Ylva Slysinn, 'Mischievous She-Wolf,' because she can be very intelligently naughty at times 😍❤️
