Another Place consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea.

The Another Place figures - each one weighing 650 kilos - are made from casts of the artist's own body standing on the beach, all of them looking out to sea, staring at the horizon in silent expectation.

Exmoor:

Exmoor is named after the River Exe and is a moorland area located in West Somerset and North Devon. During the 1950s Exmoor was made a national park.

Exmoor is a geologist and geographers paradise as it houses over 30 miles of coastline with rocks as old as over 4 million years ago! Along the dramatic coast are England's highest sea cliffs. Inland is wild heather moorland, heaths and deep wooded coombes of ancient oak forest which you can share with red deer and Exmoor ponies

The "Beast from the East"

So the extremely cold weather is finally departing, maybe spring really is just around the corner.

At this time of year, there is normally a polar vortex (a large mass of cold air sitting above the North Pole, which normally moves the air from west to east, however recently there was a sudden stratospheric warming which caused the vortex to break up and shift the wind direction (this time from east to west).

However, we can all be grateful that the "beast" is significantly tamed on its journey from the east - it was -50C in Siberia, however the air "warms up" considerably by the time it reaches the UK! 💨❄️☃️

Buttermere is one of the small 'lakes', only a mile and a quarter long and about half a mile wide and derives its name from a corruption of 'Boethar', a Norse chieftain who bestowed his name on the lake.

The lake, which is one and a half miles long , just under a mile across at its widest point, and over 90 feet deep, was divided from adjacent Crummock Water when a larger lake silted up at its centre.

The Maldives

This tropical country sits in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and is made up of 1,190 coral islands and atolls that stretch over 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 sq mi). Around 800 of them are still uninhabited, 200 islands are populated, about 110 host Hotels and Resorts. The rest of the islands are used for airports, agriculture, picnics, governmental or other industrial activities.

The word atoll is derived from the Divehi word atholhu, which means a ring-like coral island surrounding a lagoon. It is the only English word derived from Divehi.

Autumnal Reflections - Bracebridge, Sutton Park

Leaves contain chemical pigments, like chlorophyll, that makes leaves green. The leaves also contain the chemical carotene which has a yellow colour. Carotene is in the leaves all year, but is masked by the green of the chlorophyll. As autumn approaches the chlorophyll breaks down and reveals the other pigments within the leaf than aren't affected by the cooler temperatures.

To get the most vibrant autumn colours, you need a dry summer followed by dry, sunny autumn days with cold nights. Cloudy and rainy autumn days lead to muted autumn colours.

Widemouth Bay, Cornwall is actually made up of two beaches, the left hand side generally being called Black Rock and right being called North Beach. The beaches together add up to a mile of sand which is joined together at all but high tide

England’s first Christmas tree was brought to Windsor by Charlotte, wife of George III, in 1800...but it was the trees brought in the 1840s by Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, that led to their popularity throughout the UK.

Nearly 60 million Christmas trees are grown each year in Europe

Happy Christmas everyone! 🎅🎄

The moon: The surface area of the moon is 14,658,000 square miles or 9.4 billion acres. About 49 moons would fit inside the Earth. Only 59% of the moon's surface is visible from earth.

Each full moon has a name, the most recent full moon was called the "Hunters Moon". The next full moon is called "Moon Before Yule"

In the Lake District there is only one official lake - Bassenthwaite Lake. All the others are 'meres' or 'waters'.

Buttermere is one of the small 'lakes', only a mile and a quarter long and about half a mile wide. It is in the Buttermere valley close to two other lakes, Crummock and Loweswater.
