Blake. A name of two opposites.

Blake has Old English roots, and what's rather lovely about it is that it carries two completely contrasting meanings: “dark” or “black” and “pale” or “white.” Somewhere along the way, these two opposing words came together to become one name.

And actually, I think there might be something rather perfect about that for a baby arriving into the world — because isn't that what parenthood is?

It's the light and the dark.

The breathtakingly beautiful moments that make your heart feel like it might burst, and the nights when you're exhausted, covered in milk and wondering if you'll ever sleep again.

It's softness and strength. The tiny fingers wrapped around yours, and the fierce instinct that suddenly makes you feel like you could take on the entire world to protect this little person.

It's laughter and tears, wonder and worry, absolute confidence followed five minutes later by “am I doing this right?”

It's the ordinary and the extraordinary, the beautiful and the messy, the moments you wish you could freeze and the moments you're quietly counting down until bedtime.

And somehow, all of those opposites belong together.

Just like Blake.

So perhaps her name is more fitting than her family even realise.

Because raising a child is never just light or dark. It's everything in between. And that's where the magic lives. 🤍

It might still be summer, but here at Slinky Photography Studio, we’re officially allowed to start talking about Christmas… because all three of this year’s Christmas sets are now open for bookings! 🎅🏻

And this year, there really is something for everyone.

Two big girls. One very tiny little boy. He has two big sisters...

They're four and three, which means he has arrived into a household where opinions are plentiful, personal space is optional, and someone is always ready to tell you exactly what you're doing wrong.

Luckily for him, they also happen to be completely besotted with their new baby brother!

There was something so brilliant about watching them during this session. They're still tiny themselves, yet suddenly they're the big ones. Carefully touching his little fingers, peering at his face, wanting to be close to him and taking their new job as Big Sisters very, very seriously.

And him?

Well, he mostly just lay there looking ridiculously cute, completely unaware that he's just been handed two lifelong protectors, two people who will probably embarrass him spectacularly when he's older, and two built-in best friends.

Although I'm fairly sure the cuddles will become less enthusiastic when he starts stealing their stuff.

For now, though, he's their baby brother.

And they are absolutely his girls. 💙

✨ Baby's First Christmas ✨

There are some Christmases you remember because of the presents, some because of the chaos, and some because of the people sitting around the table.

And then there is Baby's First Christmas.

The Christmas when everything feels a little different because there is suddenly this tiny person at the centre of it all. The one who won't remember the lights, the wrapping paper or the ridiculous number of photographs you took… but who will completely change the way you remember Christmas forever.

That tiny face peeking out from beneath their little hat. Those impossibly soft fingers. Chubby legs kicking through the snow. The wonder in their eyes as they discover their very first Christmas lights.

I've wanted my final Christmas set to capture that feeling — soft, dreamy and beautifully simple, with snowy trees, warm twinkling lights and just enough magic to make it feel like you've wandered into a little winter wonderland.

Because they only get one first Christmas.

And perhaps they won't remember it.

But you'll remember how tiny they were. You'll remember how it felt to hold them. And one day, they'll look at these photographs and see just how very loved they were from the very beginning.

That's the magic I want to capture. 🤍
