Well this week at the club we covered rear curtain sync and here's how NOT to do it. I thought I would share my fail with you anyway, I have done this in the past and had great results but I'm not very impressed with my effort this time. For anyone that does not know what rear curtain sync is, the camera is set to fire the flash at the end of the exposure rather that the start of the exposure which is the normal method. The effect is to capture the movement as a blur until the flash fires to freeze the movement. If anyone is interested how this is done drop me a message and I will try to explain the technicality's and how the camera achieves this. I have done this before and fully understand the way it works but have only used it outdoors to capture moving vehicle's and my camera has been in charge of the flash. I assumed that was how we were going to work on this, tonight we had around 12 cameras one of which was in charge of the flash so had to do a work around which I was not prepared for and didn't have the right equipment with me so it didn't work for me to get the quality of image I was wanting.😢 More images as usual on the web site www.imagesbystephen.co.uk

Another week at the club with something I have never tried before this week. The subject we were exploring is called cross polarisation and it finding the hidden colours in ordinary plastic household items. To get the colours to show the light source has to be polarised and then using a circular polariser filter in the camera lens adjusting it until it produced a black background with the array of colours showing in the plastic. The plastic items I used were clear plastic. I think I will be visiting this again at home when I can find an interesting object at an interesting angle. Well this is the first post in 2025 and this year is nearly over. 2025 has not been the best of years as I have been ill for most of it, around Christmas last year I started to feel extremely tired with the slightest thing I did. The tiredness thing had been there for at least a year but it really started getting worse by Christmas. By March I was in a wheel chair for anything more than moving room to room at home, lots of tests later it was discovered I had a very large tumour on my liver. Surgery was the only option I was told its a big operation so it will be 6-8 hours with two surgeons 24 hour in ICU and about 7 days on the ward. Reality was 6-8 hours on the table with two fantastic surgeons 3 weeks in ICU and nearly 10 weeks in hospital. What they removed was the size of a small football with half my liver. I went from my normal 72-75kg down to 52kg so recovering is going to be a long haul but life is starting to get back to some sort of ordinary. Anyway that's why there has been no posts this year, I have attended the camera club a couple of times recently for the social side and last week I even took the camera. So here we have the first attempt back behind the camera Crashing Glasses, first few were done at the club but I could not get my timing the others were done at home with a bit more success. The idea is to freeze the action just at the right time to get some interesting shots all good fun :)

Well last night was the final club meeting for this year and we had a visitor. A rather worst for wear Santa, not quite what we was expecting but this guy never disappoints. I rather enjoyed his take on a Santa shoot, I hope you enjoy the pics.

It’s been a busy few months at the Photo Club so I thought I would post some images. Still doing a lot of abstract stuff and still really enjoying every night I attend. Some of the subjects included silhouettes and shadows, preying mantis, a gothic studio night and light trails. Hope you enjoy the images as much as I have enjoyed making them.

Well its been a few weeks since I last posted, two weeks ago was AGM at the photo club so no practical work. Last week was smoke patterns that I connected so well with that they didn't even make the cutting room let alone the cutting room floor. Anyway onwards and upwards in my quest to get back to using the camera more I tried another thing not done before this week. I am not set up for sports photography and a such never tried it, however I went along to a Powerboat race meeting at Carr Mill Dam and what a great way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon. The results show I don't have the gear or experience for this type of photography but it was still a great afternoon out. Whilst I really enjoyed the experience I don't think I will be looking to spend £2-3K on a better lens to gain the experience.

Refraction in a lens ball this week, really quite enjoying this abstract stuff. I have used the lens ball before but just to show an actual scene in the ball but once you done that it becomes a bit boring to keep doing it, with abstract every image can take a very different look.

Hi again, so last week no post as I was otherwise engaged in a family day out with the grandkids on a canal barge so missed the club. This week the theme was "Trapped in Ice" and here we have my offerings. Again not something I have done before but still good fun and that's what its all about.

So the remit at the club this week was Still Life (open subject) so I thought vintage photo gear my be appropriate and they do actually do still have life in them. Again another subject I’m a little bit out of my comfort zone but still great fun.
