LAST CHANCE TO SEE THIS WEEKEND!!!

The Edward Reeves Archive lightbox exhibition "Stories Seen Through A Glass Plate: Working Lewes" is coming to a close on the 5th of October.

The exhibitions run on a three year cycle with a fallow year every third, meaning the lightboxes will not be back until 2028... See them while you can!

Can you spot which four shops these ones are in?

An additional reminder for anyone taking part in the children's trail that all competition entries must be handed in by 5th October to Edward Reeves Photography, the Town Hall reception or Bags of Books. If those places are closed, just pop them through the letterbox 🙂

For 170 years, we have proudly made the claim "ALL NEGATIVES KEPT; COPIES CAN BE PROCURED AT ANY TIME" - periodically, we get to put it to the test.

During last weekend's exhibition open days, a guest brought along an original print of a family wedding photo, taken in our garden in 1929. Using the negative number written on the back of the print [W3425], we were able to pull the original negative from the negative room and produce a brand new high quality digital scan, allowing Mabel and Reginald's wedding day to be seen in incredible detail once again, nearly 100 years later.

To see the garden, studio and negative room yourself, we will be open this weekend 11am-4pm for Artwave Festival – and if you have a print you think might be one of ours, why not bring it with you!

Traffic jams in Lewes are not a recent development...

Sharing one from our archive today - this and 79 others are currently on display in lightboxes in windows throughout Lewes, as part of Stories Seen Through a Glass Plate: Working Lewes.

In an attempt to divert increasingly heavy traffic away from the High Street, a bold, controversial East Sussex County Council proposal for a Relief Road would have seen 300 houses demolished and 1000 people rehoused. This plan – and Lewes’ future – became a national issue, with conservationists, architects and even the BBC joining the debate.

The plan was featured in ‘Country Life’ magazine, which called it ‘The New Battle of Lewes’ and described how ‘cars, buses and heavy roaring lorries rumble along the High Street.’ One exasperated bus conductor, interviewed by the magazine, exclaimed ‘the only thing to do is pull the whole blinkin’ place down.’

All of our archive images are scanned from the original negatives, meaning the level of detail preserved is absolutely stunning - look at all those milk bottles!

We are very excited that for the first time, the Edward Reeves Archive Lightbox Exhibition includes a children’s trail and competition, created in collaboration with 6th Lewes Scouts! The competition is free and open to all, with three trails for age groups 6-8 years; 8-10 years and 10-14 years.

Prizes to be presented by the Mayor of Lewes at Lewes Town Hall. First prize in each age group is a portrait session at the Edward Reeves Studio. Other prizes include solar printing kits.

To enter, pick up a yellow quiz leaflet from Lewes Town Hall, Edward Reeves Photography or many other places around the town.

All entries must be handed in to either Lewes Town Hall, Bags of Books or Edward Reeves Photography by Monday 5th October 2026.

Please remember:

- Maximum one entry per person
- The judges’ decision is final(!)
- If you have won, you will be contacted by Monday 12 October 2026.
