A little look behind the scenes as I photograph a nice scene in the northern edge of the Campsie Fells.

Beinn Bhreac Reflections

On my early morning visit to the Trossachs last week, I was treated to some wonderful reflections as conditions were beautifully calm, with no wind.

After about an hour, I noticed these fingers of cloud sliding across the sky towards Beinn Bhreac on the far shore and knew they could bring some much needed interest to the blue sky. I quickly grabbed my wide angle lens and composed the shot, taking care to get everything level and in focus.

Inspired by the work of and I felt that it would make a great monochrome picture and have more impact than a colour image.

Lomond reflections.

A beautiful start to my day on the shores of Loch Lomond this morning. With sunshine and only 2mph of breeze forecast, I hoped to create an image along the incorporating some reflections. I came across this scene and decided I'd make a photograph of the bay, Scots Pine and Ben Lomond which was reflected beautifully in the calm waters.

I made a number of exposures but this early one was my favourite as the sunlight was coming through the canopy of the pine and also flooding onto the beach and foreground rocks.

I'm considering starting a West Highland Way project, creating a body of work along the route with a view to completing it in 2030 - the 50th anniversary of the route.

This could have been a good start!

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park

With sunshine and no wind forecast I decided to take a wee visit to Loch Lomond in the hope that I could make a nice image with some reflections.

I had hoped for a few more clouds in the sky to add interest, but it was beautifully peaceful nonetheless and amazing to see the loch like this, given it's size and being open to any breeze.

That's one of the things I love about landscape photography - the meditation of taking in the beauty of nature's display.

Frozen in time
I took a wee wander up to Lennox Castle last week and this twisted old tree with the castle just visible though it's branches caught my eye, so I decided to make a quick snapshot of it. Might be one I'll revisit with my big camera.

Hey, I'm on YouTube! https://youtube.com/?si=qOhHZhJ118Mzl2CB

I've started adding a few 'shorts' as a way of recording my photography outings and sharing the beauty of the natural world. I'm considering adding some longer videos this year, maybe highlighting my process, thoughts, approach etc.

Let me know if there's anything landscape photography wise that you'd like to see and hear about - maybe things you don't find on other channels.

Last light, Dunmore Hill Fort.

As the weather forecast showed clearing skies at the end of the day yesterday, I decided to head up the hills by Fintry to enjoy some sunlight, recce a place for future workshops and maybe make a photo. It's one my favourite local places and has amazing views for such a small hill. You can see why it was a hill fort.

I chose this composition just before the sun set into the cloud bank on the horizon to my left. I felt the golden light on the repeating tufts of grass told the story of the place best, and the sunlit fields in the middle distance and splashes of light on the distant mountains added a sense of depth.

The temperature dropped quickly when the sun disappeared and so it was time to get off the hill, grab some snacks at Fintry Sports Club and drive home for dinner!

Out hunting for images for my 2027 Campsie Light calendar already!

I've been thinking the snowdrops below Lennox Castle could be a nice February image. I was hoping for some blue skies and sunshine to give that spring feeling but that didn't happen. Not to worry as woodland scenes often look better in soft light.

I liked how this spot enabled me to show just a little of Lennox Castle through the trees and also the ruin of Woodhead House on the far right of the scene.

Thanks again to everyone who bought my 2026 calendar - I really hope you're all enjoying it!
