WHAT DOES A PHOTOGRAPHER DO WITH FREE TIME ON A WORK TRIP?
Takes more pictures. Obviously.

I had an hour or so to myself in New Orleans and I didn’t think twice about what to do with the time. Camera in hand, no brief, no deliverables, no client to answer to, just me exploring the city. The hardest decision was what street to walk down next.

People ask me sometimes if I ever get tired of it. Of always seeing in frames, always noticing the light, always finding the shot in an ordinary moment. And the honest answer is no. Not even slightly.

A photographer’s eye doesn’t close on downtime. It just relaxes a little. The urgency drops away and what’s left is the part that actually started all of this, the pure enjoyment of looking at the world and wanting to capture it.

When your job is the thing you’d do anyway, free time and work time start to look a lot like the same thing.

CONTENT OVERWHELM...
I am a photographer. I have more content than I know what to do with. And somehow that makes posting harder, not easier.

Too much is just as paralysing as not enough. I sit down to pick something, open a folder with thousands of images, and close the laptop twenty minutes later having posted nothing. Sound familiar?

Here’s what actually helps me when it gets like that.

A list. Not a complicated content strategy, just a simple written list of what I actually want to say this week. The images come second. The idea always comes first. The ticking off is very satisfying.

Time allocations. I give myself a window to pick, edit, and caption. When the window closes I hope to have a finished post. Perfectionism is just procrastination in a nicer outfit.

A change of scenery. Something about sitting in a different space completely unlocks the decision making. Coffee shop, a different room, outside. Anywhere that isn’t the place where I’ve been staring at the same folder for an hour.

The content is there. It always was. Sometimes you just need to get out of your own way.

THIS IS WHY I TAKE MY SON TO WORK …

Auburn comes to the studio with me occasionally and honestly it’s one of my favourite things we do together.

He helps me set up the set, watches the images come in on the screen, jumps in front of the camera when needed and he loves all of it.

But more than the fun of it, I want him to see something specific. I want him to see his mum doing work she genuinely loves. Not tolerates. Not survives. Loves.

I want him to understand from as early as possible that a career doesn’t have to mean the same chair, the same desk, the same four walls every single day. That creativity is a viable path. That you can build something with your hands and your eye and your instincts and make a real life from it.

He has the most practical little mind, he wants to know how everything works, why every decision gets made, what happens next. Photography makes complete sense to him in a way that makes my heart full every single time.

I’m not raising him to follow my path. I’m raising him to know that his options are wide open.

This is just one way of showing him that.

IF I HAD MY OWN STUDIO I WOULD …

This thought lives rent free in my head.

I’d shoot every single day. Not always for a client, not always for a brief, just for the love of it.
The kind of shooting that keeps you sharp and reminds you why you started.
Challenges I set myself. Still life setups I’ve been turning over in my mind for months but never quite have the space to try.
I’d open it up to brands who need a beautiful, affordable space without the corporate day rate.
A creative environment that actually feels like something, not four white walls and a paper roll.
The kind of space that attracts the right people and the right energy.
I’d be on reels constantly. Showing the reality of running a photography business, the unglamorous bits alongside the dream jobs.
How to price, how to pitch, how to build something sustainable doing the thing you love. The content I wish had existed when I was figuring it all out.
More stories. More behind the scenes. More of the process that usually only lives inside my head.
Manifesting. Loudly.

PRICING MY WORK ...

For a really long time I thought pricing just meant working out how long the shoot was and charging for that.

That was it. That was my whole system. And then I’d finish a job, feel weird about the money, and not really understand why I felt like I had undercharged.

It took me embarrassingly long to realise I wasn’t actually calculating a price. I was just picking a number for that one day, that felt small enough that nobody could argue with it.

I wasn’t accounting for the editing hours, the back and forth emails, the travel, the kit, the software subscriptions, the mental load of running an actual business.
And because I kept undercharging, I kept feeling like the work wasn’t worth more. Wrongly, the low price became proof to me that I wasn’t worth more. That’s the part nobody talks about.

Well... I know better now. I know what goes into a booking, I know what my time actually costs, I know what I’m worth, and I know how to fight for it. It took longer than it should have but I got there in the end.

If you’ve ever finished a job, have the edits looming, and felt like you haven’t priced it right, you’re not alone. Share your pain with me, I have been there many times before !

PERSONAL STYLE...
..has consistently been a true passion of mine. Back in my early twenties while living in New York, I began sharing my fashion journey through a blog. I labeled it “the boyish side of the girl,” and by 2016, I was fortunate enough to receive commissioned work. However, when I returned to the UK, the hustle and bustle of London life distracted me, leading to the gradual decline of my blog.

In the past year, I’ve rekindled my interest in self-styling, approaching it in a more refined, editorial manner in line with my Photography work. I absolutely adore it, and I’m continually surprised by the support I receive from brands, even as a relatively small creator.

I plan to carry on my style series throughout 2026, incorporating various updates, and I genuinely hope that you will enjoy the content I share.

I am always receptive to collaborations and commissions from emerging brands.

This post serves as a brief update on my recent endeavors and marks the beginning of my 2026 content journey 🌟

1 DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS WE MEET THE LOCAL MERCHANTS...
.. Otherwise known as Sam and Ed, the owners of the infamous Leigh on sea based menswear shop- The Local Merchants.

Sam can usually be heard howling with laughter, either at a joke he’s just made or at something delightfully daft Ed has said. Some even claim his laugh carries all the way to the waterfront.

Ed, meanwhile, is often found carefully positioning his iPhone, attempting to capture the next perfectly timed, Mr Bean–esque moment for the TLM Instagram, I am certain it’s only a matter of time before one goes viral.

Together, they offer Leigh-on-Sea a curated approach to modern menswear.
Refined, wearable, softly tailored pieces designed to slot seamlessly into each individual wardrobe.
Add in a couch affectionately known as “the men’s therapy couch of Leigh”, the occasional cheeky beer (or wine) from the stockroom, and it’s no surprise the shop is always alive with chatter, laughter, and genuine warmth, courtesy of these two thoroughly loveable chaps.

I asked chat GPT to describe the Local Merchants style and it came back with ... “modern tailored minimalism with a soft, European sensibility” ... and it’s not wrong.

All Sam wants for Christmas is a day out on the razz with in character as David Brent … can I come too ?

All Ed wants for Christmas is a Dome XL (Gen 2) Pizza Oven … not to be specific or anything.

And that concludes the Advent series 2025.
Thank you all for your wonderful comments and likes, this one went off 🚀 and most importantly thanks to Sam and Ed for trusting my vision, dedicating their time and having endless WhatsApp conversations with all involved to schedule the shoot days. Big love to you both.

2 DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS WE MEET JAMIE ...

Jamie is the owner of Vino Vero in Leigh on Sea.

He’s most often found replenishing the shelves with thoughtfully curated organic and biodynamic wines, a West Ham match humming in the background... an influence that frequently explains the glass in his hand.

The Local Merchants describe his style as if Peggs & Son threw up on him, with a taste of The Locals.
