OK let's clear this up right now shall we....
When the Flash Hits the Sass:
A Quick Note on Venue Photography 📸✨
To anyone who was out at The Ivory for the FML event last night, you might have seen me floating around with the camera doing what I do best - capturing the brilliant atmosphere and the great vibes.
Now, most people are absolute legends when the camera comes out, but every now and then, I get someone trying to lecture me on the law after a few too many drinks! So, just to clear the air with a bit of common sense (and a smile):
1. Yes, I'm actually supposed to be there 🎟️
I don't just wander into venues with a DSLR for the good of my health. I’m hired directly by the venue and event organisers (in this case, The Ivory and FML) to document the night. I’ve worked with them for years and have the full backing and agreement of the management to be there doing my job.
2. The Law vs. 'Venue Law' 📜
As any legal expert (or Black Belt Barrister on YouTube!) will tell you, photographers are well within their rights to shoot in public spaces. On private property, it comes down to having the permission of the owner or management - which I fully have before I even set foot inside.
3. Courtesy works both ways 🤝
Here’s the simplest rule of all: If you don't want your photo taken, just ask nicely!
If you come up to me like a civilised human being and say, "Hey, mate, I'd rather not be in any photos tonight," I will happily nod, make a mental note of your face, and make sure you're kept out of the shots. Easy peasy. No drama, no debate.
However, coming at me snotty or talking down to me while I’m simply trying to do the job I was hired to do? Not the way to go. I'm always up for a laugh and a bit of banter, but I'm not here to be spoken to like dirt!
At the end of the day, I’m there to make the event look amazing and capture people having a good time. If you see me out with the rig, give us a smile - or if you’re camera-shy, just let me know politely and we’re all good!
Catch you at the next one! 🎧📸
