Summer light brings a new narrative; a chance to slough away our civilised selves. We can laugh in the face of school uniforms and office wear, embrace the stickiness of slurpees and sunscreen, and let the feral take hold.

What wildness will you be getting up to?

I was absolutely delighted to discover that this photo won an award in the latest This is Reportage Family competition! 🤩 This is the end result of a pretty spectacular sand fight between my two boys on our last visit to Canada. It was a joy to watch and definitely worth the ton of sand that ended up in the car on the journey back from the beach. 😂 Thank you so much to all the judges and to for this award! 🙏😍🎉

It's been over a week since I watched the live judging of the Made for Documentary Awards and I’m still buzzing! There’s nothing quite like watching live critique to gain an understanding of what makes a photo work technically and resonate with the viewer. I came away feeling enlightened and inspired.

Watching the broadcast, I was also thrilled to discover that my photo was selected for an honourable mention by the judges. A huge thank you to all the judges; Kristine Nyborg (), Chuck Anerino (), Margaret Albaugh (), Emma Collins (), Antonina Mamzenko (), and Alice Chapman (), for the honour.

It was wonderful to see the amazing work of this community of documentary family photographers. Congratulations to all the winners! 🎉👏

Sometimes it’s fun to add a little drama into your daily getting-ready-for-school routine… after all, you are the hero of your own story.

The cool thing about documentary photography is that it’s not about having your picture taken.

Don’t get me wrong - you’ll be photographed – but the experience won’t be centred around the camera. Hopefully you won’t be thinking about the camera at all!

You’ll be too busy hanging out with your favourite people, relaxing into your usual routines and hobbies, and working through any curve balls that come your way – just like this collection of cousins did one Saturday afternoon.

I think they’ll look back on this day and just remember the fun they had running up and down their backyard football pitch, jumping on the trampoline, and being all together… all the more because they’ll have the photos to remind them.

If this type of photography experience sounds like a good fit for you and your family, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Have you seen “Race Around the World”?

It’s a hit at my house. We all love seeing how teams balance out their (often competing) interests – getting to their destination quickly, and making the most of their trip.

Life feels like this too. Often we’re so busy checking off our to-do lists and keeping our eye on the final checkpoint that we forget to enjoy the journey. We fail to reap the benefits of a rest, a change of scene, and a shift in perspective.

You don’t have to go far to restore the balance. Sometimes it’s just about slowing down rather than racing along. Lounging on hillsides, throwing ice balls in the air, watching a tiny crab wander along your hand, or seeing what your own shadow is up to.

As a kid, I loved quick-fix metamorphosis stories, like the one where the princess kisses the frog and he turns into a handsome prince, or when Cinderella’s fairy godmother transforms her into the belle of the ball. All it took was a bit of magic to make everything better.

In real life, however, fairytale wands and instant transformations don’t exist, and we’re stuck with relying on our own resources to cope with whatever comes our way. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing, though.

Perhaps the long process of trial and error, of making mistakes and learning from them, of pushing past comfort zones to see what lies beyond them, is a more gratifying way of living life and discovering our true selves.

And we usually find there are still plenty of fairy godmothers (and godfathers) to help us on our way.

Happy first day of spring!

We have yet to mow the lawn this year, but I can already smell that fresh cut grass and feel the warm sun on my face after a long, rainy winter. I can’t wait for the kids to have water fights in the back yard and for us to have friends around for barbecues. That feeling of excitement is creeping in… I know there will be longer and lighter days ahead.

What do you love about this time of year?

Here’s to all you mums out there who are disentangling hair from trampoline zippers, having heart-to-hearts at the park, soothing babies to sleep, getting coiffed, snuggling almost-grown kiddos, limboing under dog leads, and all the other big and little things you do for your kids!

“Motherhood is a choice you make every day, to put someone else’s happiness and well-being ahead of your own, to teach the hard lessons, to do the right thing even when you’re not sure what the right thing is...and to forgive yourself, over and over again, for doing everything wrong.” - Donna Ball

Life with small people is full of the ridiculous.

I remember chasing after my kids and bear-hugging them just long enough to smear sunscreen on their faces, doing the vacuuming with a tiny human attached to my leg, and trying to make myself invisible during toddler meltdowns at the supermarket. I wouldn’t say those were my favourite moments at the time, but thinking back on them makes me smile.

When I photograph families, I bring my compassion and open-mindedness with me. I won’t bat an eye if your kiddo pours her lunch on her head, refuses to put his shoes on, or launches into a screaming fit. I’ve been there too! I’ll document these challenging moments, along with all the fun, tenderness and togetherness that make up day-to-day life with your family.

I think you’ll love having photos of your real life, just as it is. If you think so too, get in touch and we’ll make it happen!

Hi, I’m Erin. It’s been a while, so I thought I’d say hello and share a few things about myself!

I grew up on the west coast Canada, spent many years in France, and now I’m settled in the UK (in beautiful Warwick) with my husband, two boys, and an embarrassingly weedy garden.

I’m a huge fan of travelling, rambling in the outdoors, playing board games (the sillier the better), and eating (especially popcorn).

My favourite movies are “Sling Blade” and “Paddington 2”, and my current bedside book is Richard Osman’s “The Last Devil to Die”, which I’m trying to read slowly so it lasts longer.

I love animals, and I couldn’t be more excited because we’re finally getting a puppy this year - please let me know if you have any tips!

As you might have guessed, my other favourite thing to do is photography. I love thinking about ways to capture personalities and tell stories with my camera; for my own family, and for yours.

I’d love to hear more about you and whatever floats your boat!

Thanks so much to my delightful and talented friend Ana Backhaus for the lovely photo.
