As it's such a dreich and windy day I though some of you might want to see some pics of Braemore in the autumnal sunshine last weekend. Very few places like it whatever the weather, but it truly glows in the sunshine. :-)

A few shots taken at Berriedale earlier today in the glorious autumnal sunshine, and a couple from 2017 and one from 2018 as a reminder of the old road layout. It's nice to see the landscaping on the recent works starting to fill in nicely.

A few shots from a recent visit to Clyne Parish Church in Brora. It is a stunning building and has some amazing carpentry and stained glass.

The main feature for me though was the church organ which is on the War Museums War Memorials Register (Ref. No. 75973) and was installed to commemorate 15 service personnel from the parish who gave the ultimate sacrifice in WW1. The organ has a plate on it with the name ‘E.H. Lawton’, and the date 1920. E.H. Lawton owned Pittodrie Organ Works in Aberdeen so I’m assuming he manufactured and installed it.

I had a grand day out at the Lairg Sale on Monday with Team Langdale for the sale of Hill Cheviots with the highlight being watching their pen of 3 gimmers achieve £800! As always, it was a pleasure to meet up with friends, old and new, and fantastic to see so many teams getting some amazing trade and being rewarded for all their hard work! 👏

And although it’s more years than I care to count since I first went to a sale at Lairg I managed to get the drone up and get a few shots, and got a whole new perspective of the mart site.

I was over at Kylesku earlier this week, where our late mother, Barbara, was born and brought up, on a croft at Newton. Kylesku Bridge opened to traffic in July 1984 and was formally opened by the Queen on 8 August 1984. In 2019, the bridge was classified as a Category A structure by Historic Environment Scotland, recognising it as "visually striking and technically innovative".

I also stopped at Assynt Old Parish Church. The current church was built between 1741-1743 at a cost of c. £103 11shillings Sterling, with substantial alterations by William C Joass in 1900 costing an additional £297 and 13 shillings!

There is a war memorial by the entrance, dedicated to the crew of an RAF Avro Anson, which crashed on Ben More Assynt on the 13th of April 1941. Despite an extensive search, it was 6 weeks before the wrecked plane and the bodies of the six-man crew were found. Due to the passage of time and remoteness, the airmen were buried at the scene of the crash. The memorial at the church contains soil from the burial site. A few photos of the Bunillidh Church of Scotland in Helmsdale, which is currently on the market. I understand the Garbh Allt Community Initiative (GACI) is considering buying it as it is within the GACI crofting township of West Helmsdale.

The numbers in the stained glass had me curious, but it seems they refer to significant dates in the church. The year 1733 marked the First Secession, 1843 was the Great Disruption and 1900 was the year the United Free Church was formed.

I was also lucky enough to also photograph communion tokens from Loth Church. On one side, they read LOVE TOKENS FOR LOTH 1828, but it seems that may have offended some of the congregation at the time as more than half of the tokens had the word LOVE scratched off!

I understand the church that stands at Kildonan today was built in 1788. It replaced a “mortuary chapel” on the site of the medieval church of St Donan, built around 1250, which served as the traditional burial place for the chiefs of Clan Gunn.

The Strath of Kildonan was the historical stronghold of the Gunns until many were displaced during the Highland Clearances. There is a plaque on the gable of the church to all the ‘Selkirk Settlers’. The Selkirk Settlers were Scottish Highlanders displaced by the Highland Clearances, taken to the Red River Valley of Manitoba in 1812 and 1813 by Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk.

According to an interpretive panel in the church, “The Rev. Alexander Sage was presented by the Sutherland family to Kildonan on the 10th May 1787 and preached for 37 years until he died in 1824. His first and second wives both predeceased him and he is buried along with them in a stone enclosure to the west of the church.”
