At Whitby Abbey!
A SHORT HISTORY:
657 AD: First monastery founded by King Oswiu and led by Abbess Hild (Streoneshalh).
664 AD: Hosted the historic Synod of Whitby.9th Century: Destroyed and abandoned following Viking/Danish raids.
1078: Re-established as a Benedictine monastic community by the monk Reinfrid.
1225–1250: Major construction of the magnificent Gothic abbey church seen in ruins today.
1539: Surrendered and dismantled during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII.
