The ancient pine forest of Rothiemurchus on a serene misty morning in the Cairngorms. I've been to this spot many times and never really noticed that the layers of trees were so distinct. It's amazing how a little mist can add depth and transform a simple scene like this completely.

Buachaille Etive Mor, Glen Coe.

Not an original shot by any means, but I'd been wandering up the River Coupal from the bridge on a reccie for foregrounds and found this little cascade. It was a little precarious standing on slippery rocks but I was glad I made the effort.

Uath Lochan, Cairngorms National Park.

A well kent view in Inshriach forest, in the Cairngorms. Another photographer was busy at the usual viewpoint, so I was happy to look for an alternative foreground. This fern caught my eye but I had to climb down the cliff a little to get to it. The Hard Fern (Blechnum spicant) is evergreen, and really makes a statement when surrounded by the white stuff! When the sun eventually rose above the mountains and back-lit the leaves I went into panic mode, but managed this image. The 14-24mm lens was about 10cm from the fern, so a focus-stack was needed to keep everything sharp. Let me know if you think it worked out!

A cold and misty winter morning at Loch Insh in early December 2023.

A soft mono edit seemed appropriate, as my father had just passed away and would soon be put to rest on the other side of the river, 200m away. He would have loved to be out with his camera on a morning like this!

Elgol blues.

I was fortunate to be on Skye in March last year during a week of snowy weather. This wintery image was taken just before most of the snow arrived. Balancing the tripod in the waves was tricky, and I seem to recall getting wet feet. It was cold and windy, but you don't notice when you're immersed in such an epic location.

Snowfall at Rannoch Moor.

After shooting the scene in my previous post, a heavy and prolonged snow shower arrived. I love this kind of weather, and would have happily stayed all day, but the roads were quickly turning very white and the traffic reports were horrendous. So after taking this image I jumped in the car and joined a very slow and rather treacherous journey south.

Spindrift at Rannoch Moor. Taken shortly after the image in the previous post, the wind had now picked up and fresh snow was scurrying across the steely blue ice in white streaks.

First post from a recent day trip to Rannoch Moor. It was a cold morning and there was a snow storm brewing in the distance. These ice formations caught my eye and they seemed to lead the eye to the large scattered boulders in the mid-ground. Within a few minutes the ice was covered with spin drift and blowing snow. I don't often do a mono edit, but it seemed fitting for this scene.
