Thrilled to announce the venues and launch dates for up coming exhibits of my project ‘Uisge Spè: Where Water Shapes a Nation.’
On the date of the first launch it will have been a year in the making (so far!) and these exhibits wouldn’t be happening without the support of the whom I’m very thankful to for helping this work take its next step!
There’s more information to come as the exhibits will vary around the specific venues, with a couple having the help of and for exciting installations around the photography, and specific events at others!

For now the launch dates and venues are:
- Fri 3rd July, , Kingussie.
- Fri 24th July, , Glenmore.
- Fri 14th Aug, , Boat of Garten.
- Fri 11th Sept, , Grantown-on-Spey.
- Fri 9th Oct, office & visitor centre, Tomintoul.

There’s more info to be released soon, and hopefully another venue in the pipeline!

What a day! Our hearts are full after being surrounded by family and great friends for a most incredible weekend!
The weather smiled on us and every step felt in line with what we each dreamt of for this day and who we are together.

A complete curveball for me as I was in London and the best chance to spend some time with my good friend was to follow him around ‘a metropolitan bicycle ride with a bit of style’.
I had my two small 35mm analogue cameras over my shoulder and from looking the event up online it seemed like the perfect chance to shoot the first b+w film that I’ve locked and loaded in many moons. Cheers for having a good stock (and being right opposite a great place for a coffee!) and I even made it into to gather inspiration over some top grub before catching Jee at his lunch stop, and thereby teleported back in time via hanging out at this very fun, slightly crazy (in the best way) and totally immersive event.
The B+W certainly suited the retro angle, I love that you have to look hard in some of these to find the hints of modern culture. I’ve also included a few colour shots at the end as one camera had a roll loaded and a few angles caught my eye. All in all an incredibly fun afternoon chilling with a good mate (as much as he could in tweeds) and shooting film!

‘Uisge Spè: Where Water Shapes a Nation’ is what I’m titling my long-term photojournalistic study of the River Spey. It is one of Scotland’s most important rivers, tracing its 170-kilometre course through the central and eastern Highlands to the coast, the Spey is a living system where environment, culture, industry and history converge.
By connecting with individuals and the landscape this work examines the river’s role in shaping identity and belonging, observing seasonal transformations, conservation efforts and local communities and industry working to preserve, protect and enjoy the river.
In connecting the dots from visible history to on-going challenges and tangible progress, the Spey becomes a microcosm of our shared future in an era when environmental progress and industrial dependency are increasingly intertwined.
A taste here of a few incredibly memorable moments working on this so far, and some of the first included images that I’ve shared on here. The lead image being on of my favourites as the ink of the hands flows into the ink of the map.

Headed up the Cairn Gorm plateau to follow and film the spring melt. Sound and movement of the shifting season as these drips start a journey, via mountain burns, tributaries and lochs, down to the Spey. I’ve gradually been learning more about the overall system of the river, the influence of meltwater (or not as the case has been in recent years) on the river environment and the species that inhabit it, who will hopefully enjoyed a more ‘normal’ year of meltwater as we still have some big snowpack up there. This short clip is best listened to either in a quiet space or with headphones in.

Thrilled to say that ‘Phase II’ of my River Spey project has received funding from the to support an engaging touring exhibit, which will move through a series of venues and communities connected to the Spey later this year!
It’s the next step for this work, presenting it within and for local communities, and their visitors, to build on the cultural and environmental awareness and impact of such a wonderful stretch of water, that provides for so many of us, as it flows from the mountains to the coast through a landscape like no other.
There’s a large amount of work and planning currently on-going and more info will be released soon along with more pictures 🤩

My last night on the River Spey of this winter descent and it’s offering quite the spectacle.
Pictures are in reverse order; Aurora illuminating the river from my camp, otter’s visiting camp (just a phone video!), a quick chat with friends George & Beth as they pass me on their Spey - Tay - Dee canoe challenge.

After yesterday’s journey to film the floods of the upper Spey, today was not quite the day we were expecting but was an eye opener nonetheless!
Having thought we’d drive as far up river as we could before hiking our boats as far upstream as possible to paddle a torrent of melt water and rain downstream, we were a little surprised by the updated forecast and found black ice blocking the road and a lack of water in the upper Spey as it had refrozen into the hills and the ground overnight. Some laps around Garva Bridge in a snow shower gave a feel for the exposed moorland rapids of this upper reach of the River.
The Spey Reservoir formed by Spey Dam remained well frozen (around 5-8 inches thick) in it’s eastern half with the far side showing the most evidence of just how quickly even a relatively calm body of water can change with a combination of human and natural influence. Broken ice and thin overnight ice around the fringes showed a considerable drop in level of about 6 inches or more.
A reminder of just how tricky it can be to get timing right for the conditions, and to keeping the plan adaptable. Huge thanks to for good company and sharing insight both about the river and his connection to it!

Melting fast! The start of my second Spey Descent is having a very different start to the summer descent. Today was a scouting trip along the upper stretch to check out how the ice is opening up across Spey Dam and to double check any pinch points in the flooded rapids above, as this stretch has a fair bit of change going on. Tomorrow joins me to enjoy the top of the river in our whitewater kayaks to capture some of the raw power that the Spey isn’t so well known for.
