Turning your camera on and off safely sounds daftly simple, doesn't it? But trust me, it's one of the most important habits you can build as a photographer.

This beginner's guide covers everything: where to find your power button, why that little blinking light matters, and the three-step routine that'll save your photos (and your sanity). No jargon, no tech-speak, just straightforward advice that even a child can follow
If you're new to photography or teaching someone who is, this one's for you. Have a read, share it with a friend, and let's keep those memory cards healthy.

Ever looked at your photos and thought, "Why are they all a bit soft?" I remember showing my first proper photo shoot to a friend and them gently pointing out that half my shots had camera shake. I was embarrassed and determined to fix it.

The good news is you don't need a tripod or expensive gear.

I've put together 5 simple exercises that'll train you to hold your camera steady as a rock. One of them involves a mirror, and yes, you'll feel a bit silly at first, but trust me, it works wonders.

I'd love to know, what's your biggest frustration when you're starting out with photography? Drop a comment below, yours might be the next post I write.

How are you holding your camera? If you are gripping it like a TV remote, we need to talk.

My new post for beginners covers the simple techniques that make your camera stable, your shots sharper, and your wrists less sore after a day of shooting. These are the fundamentals that every photographer should know, but most people never learn properly.

Let's be honest - most people buy a camera, find the on button, and ignore everything else. All those dials, buttons and mysterious rubber flaps? A complete mystery, but that's like driving a car in first gear.

My new post explains every camera part in plain English. From the sensor to the hot shoe, I cover what each thing actually does and why it matters for your photography.

Read it here: https://www.carlcooper.co.uk/camera-parts-and-functions-explained/

Now tell me - which camera part confuses you the most? I'll explain it in the comments.

Just posted the follow-up to my camera guide, this one is all about getting hands-on with your gear.

If you read my last post about camera types and thought "great, but now what?" then these five exercises are for you. They are designed to be done at home and will teach you more about your camera in one afternoon than a month of random shooting.

Here is what we are doing:
List every button and actually look up what it does (yes, all of them)

Take the same shot in auto, portrait and landscape mode and spot the differences

Shoot one scene on your phone and your camera to see what you have paid for

Time your real battery life so you know what to expect

Draw your camera from memory (sounds daft, works brilliantly)

Full details and examples here: https://www.carlcooper.co.uk/5-camera-exercises-to-master-your-gear/

Try one and let me know how you get on. Which exercise sounds most useful to you?

Struggling to choose a camera? You are not alone - it is the question I get asked most.

My new post breaks down every camera type honestly: smartphones, compacts, mirrorless, DSLRs, and even film. No jargon, no sales pitch, just practical advice to help you pick what is actually right for you.

Read it here: https://www.carlcooper.co.uk/understanding-your-camera-type/

What camera do you use now? And what are you thinking about buying next? Tell me in the comments.

What camera should you buy? It is the question I get asked most often. The honest answer is that it depends on what you want to photograph, how much you want

By the way, did you see the button at the bottom of my "What is Photography" post?

I have put together five simple exercises you can do today without leaving the house.

1. Photo Journal: Take 1 photo today that represents “your day” and write 1 sentence about it.

2. Story in 3 Shots: Tell a mini-story (e.g., making tea) using only 3 photos.

3. Compare Old & New: Find an old family photo and re-create it in the same spot today.

4. Emotion Capture: Take a photo that conveys a single emotion (joy, calm, surprise) without showing a face.

5. Object Portrait: Photograph a household object as if it were a person, give it “personality.”

Full details and examples are on the blog post here: https://www.carlcooper.co.uk/5-photography-exercises-you-can-do-at-home-today/

I would love to see what you create. Share your results in the comments below and let me see how everyone is interpreting these differently.

In my last post, I wrote about what photography is - the art of noticing and capturing light. But understanding photography and actually doing it are two
