When a couple gets married and chooses me as their photographer, it truly thrills my heart. They pick me because they’ve seen my work, so when I ask if I can share a few moments from their special day, I can’t thank them enough. They’re the ones who help my little business grow.

Twelve years ago, they met on a playground. She walked up to him and asked, “Hey, would you like to be my boyfriend?” Without hesitation, he replied, “Yeah, sure.” Yesterday, the question was, “Would you like to be my wife?” and with a sweet smile, she said, “Yes, I do.”

Love is an amazing feeling that grows over time, turning individual dreams into shared ones. Watching this couple throughout the day, you could feel the love and bond they share. With the support of loving family and friends from both sides, you just know this is a happily ever after in the making.

''reflections''

I love how this couple reflects on their special day (boom boom, see what I did there). As a photographer, I scan the scene, tap into my creativity, and, with the help of a willing guest for some veil fluffing, dash around to capture special shots without keeping the couple away for hours. I find that 30 minutes for some “just us” shots is perfect for a wedding couple, unlike some photographers who whisk newlyweds away for two hours, definitely not my style.

A young woman reached out, wanting to do something special for her neighbor. She asked, “Mandy, what are you doing next Thursday?” I checked my calendar and said I was free. She then inquired about my fee for a wedding, and when she explained that due to ill health and after waiting 34 years, Kath and Philip were finally ready to seal their love story, I told her I’d do it for free.

On the day, I hopped into my truck and, as with any wedding, gave it my all to make it truly special. Kath was nervous but overjoyed to marry her soulmate. The intimate ceremony took place in her backyard, surrounded by close family and friends. As Kath appeared, Philip was overcome with emotion; summoning all his strength, he held her hand, and together they vowed their forever love.

With tears in my eyes, I captured the moment as best I could. Philip then spoke and played a song he had written for Kath, filling the air with pure emotion. The registrar, I, and everyone there were moved to tears.

Being part of something so heartfelt and creating memories for Kath to treasure reminds me exactly why I love my job.

If your boss asked, “Will you work today for free?” wouldn’t you question it? I often get messages and emails asking me to donate to various charities. I do donate and I’m happy to, but as a self-employed person working solely for myself, I have to choose carefully who I support. Offering my services isn’t just about showing up and taking photos, it’s the travel, the time I carve out of my busy schedule, the hours spent editing and delivering images, all while keeping up with work for paying clients. Photography isn’t just pressing a shutter; it’s the unseen effort of late nights at my desk editing precious moments, the cost of the software I use, and even the electricity to power my PC and charge my batteries. These may seem small, but they’re real expenses that I have to cover myself.

I love bringing smiles to people’s faces and creating images that last a lifetime. I truly enjoy meeting amazing people who appreciate my work and want me to capture their moments through photography.

I’ve invested in high-quality equipment that I saved up for and worked hard to acquire, along with honing my skills and knowledge, to create the images you see today.

Whoever you choose, remember that being a photographer is more than just snapping a picture. It’s about someone who has spent years honing their craft, building a reputation, and delivering something unique that stands out from the rest.
