Magical Misty Morning At Scourie Campsite & Village 28th April 2026

Peaceful campsite, spectacular views of West Highland coast near Handa Island
Suits Tents, Caravans and Motorhomes, with many pitches in an elevated position overlooking the coastal horizon from the edge of the bay so everyone has a view of the sea. A short walk along the shore footpath leads to a small sandy beach. This coastal camping and caravaning site is in the centre of Scourie village itself which has a Hotel and Restaurant and the Shorehouse Seafood Restaurant is nearby overlooking the Handa ferry.

Trips to Handa Island on the ferry run daily in the season from 9:00am to 2:00pm (last ferry out – weather permitting). The best time to see the Puffins is May, June and July, but there is much to see on the water, on the Island and above in the other months.

Scourie is a village on the north-west coast of Scotland, about halfway between Ullapool and Durness. It is in the civil parish of Eddrachillis, in the traditional county of Sutherland, now part of the Highland council area; the 2011 Census classified it as "very remote rural" with an adult population of 132.

The Skye Bridge (Scottish Gaelic: Drochaid an Eilein Sgitheanaich) is a road bridge over Loch Alsh, Scotland, connecting the Isle of Skye to the island of Eilean Bàn. The name is also used for the whole Skye Crossing, which further connects Eilean Bàn to the mainland across the Carrich Viaduct. The crossing forms part of the A87.

Traditionally, the usual route from the mainland to Skye was the shortest crossing, with a length of around 500 metres (1,640 ft), across the sound between the villages of Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland and Kyleakin on the island's east coast. A ferry service operated from around 1600, run by private operators and latterly by Caledonian MacBrayne.

The bridge cost £27 million to build.

Castle Stalker, Scotland. 26th April 2026

Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep in the Scottish county of Argyll. It is set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is about 1+1⁄2 miles (2.5 kilometres) north-east of Port Appin and is visible from the A828 road about midway between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible with difficulty from the shore at low tide. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer". The island castle is one of the best preserved medieval tower houses to survive in western Scotland and is a Category A listed building. It stands in the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area.

Blair Castle, Scotland 26th April 2026

Blair Castle (in Scottish Gaelic: Caisteil Bhlàir) stands in its grounds near the village of Blair Atholl in Perthshire in Scotland. It is the ancestral home of the Clan Murray, and was historically the seat of their chief, the Duke of Atholl, though the current chief, the 12th Duke of Atholl, lives in South Africa, where he was born and raised. The castle stands in Glen Garry, and commands a strategic position on the main route (now the A9 road) through the central Scottish Highlands.

The castle is a category A listed building, and the grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens.

Whitby Harbour, Yorkshire October 2025

Whitby Harbour is an ancient and historic seaport on the North Yorkshire coast of England. The port lies at the mouth of the River Esk, where it enters into the North Sea. A port has been in existence at Whitby since at least the 7th century, when it was used to bring in supplies for Whitby Abbey. The port is famous for being the port of origin for the sailings of Captain Cook, and some of the ships that he sailed on were also built in the harbour.

Commercial cargo ceased in the late 20th century, however, the port is still an important location for the landing of fish.

Mulgrave Castle 19th October 2025

The Old Mulgrave Castle was constructed in the 13th century as a defensive residence, replacing the earlier Foss Castle also located in Mulgrave Woods. Since then, it has been home to the de Mauley family, the Bigot family, the Radcliffe family (not that one) and Edmund Lord Sheffield, though none undertook the monumental efforts to sufficiently restore this now historic castle ruin.

The castle was built piecemeal on a narrow ridge between the Sandsend and East Row Becks starting in 1069. By the time it was bestowed upon Peter de Mauley (a notoriously cruel henchmen of King John, believed to have killed Arthur of Brittany in 1203), there would have been an oval-shaped platform surrounded by a high curtain wall with dry moats that framed either end of the structure as well as a drawbridge and a three-story tower-like Keep.

By 1309, however, the castle was reportedly already in ruins, and deteriorated further still while it changed hands into the 17th century. In 1626, it briefly served as a semi-open-air hunting lodge, though at the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, Royalists forces saw tactical potential in the structure and seized it for war purposes. Upon victory, it was destroyed to prevent future use as a military base.

Once a new Mulgrave Castle was built nearby, the Earl of Mulgrave ordered his landscaper to romanticize the ruins of the old castle, rebuilding the gatehouse towers, remodeling sections of the collapsed keep, and beautifying the surrounding woodlands. With later restorations in the 1990s, several features were further fortified and landscaped to its present condition.

Whitby Abbey & St Mary's Church 17th/20th October 2025

Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom.

The Church of Saint Mary is an Anglican parish church serving the town of Whitby in North Yorkshire England. It was founded around 1110, although its interior dates chiefly from the late 18th century. The church was designated a Grade I listed building on 23 February 1954.

Rievaulx. Abbey, Yorkshire 20th October 2025

Rievaulx Abbey (/ˈriːvoʊ/ REE-voh) was a Cistercian abbey in Rievaulx, near Helmsley, in the North York Moors National Park, North Yorkshire, England. It was one of the great abbeys in England until it was seized in 1538 under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The wider site was awarded Scheduled Ancient Monument status in 1915 and the abbey was brought into the care of the then Ministry of Works in 1917. The ruins of its main buildings are today a tourist attraction, owned and maintained by English Heritage.

Rievaulx Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in the north of England, founded in 1132 by twelve monks from Clairvaux Abbey.

Its remote location was well suited to the order's ideal of a strict life of prayer and self-sufficiency with little contact with the outside world. The abbey's patron, Walter Espec, also founded another Cistercian community, that of Wardon Abbey in Bedfordshire, on unprofitable wasteland on one of his inherited estates.

William I, the first abbot of Rievaulx, started construction in the 1130s. The second abbot, Saint Aelred of Rievaulx, expanded the buildings and otherwise consolidated the existence of what in time became one of the great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire, with Fountains Abbey the second only Cistercian house to be built in Yorkshire. Under Aelred the abbey is said to have grown to some 140 monks and 500 lay brothers. By the end of his tenure Rievaulx had five daughter houses in England and Scotland.

Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire 20th October 2025

Robin Hood's Bay is a village in North Yorkshire, England. It is 6 miles (10 km) south of Whitby and 15 miles (24 km) north of Scarborough on the Yorkshire Coast. Robin Hood's Bay is a tourist destination in the North York Moors National Park.

It is an ancient chapelry of Fylingdales in the wapentake of Whitby Strand. It is on the Cleveland Way national trail and also the end point of Wainwright's Coast to Coast route.

Larpool Viaduct, Whitby 19th October 2025

Larpool Viaduct, also known as the Esk Valley Viaduct, is a 13-arch brick viaduct built to carry the Scarborough & Whitby Railway over the River Esk, North Yorkshire, England.

The viaduct was constructed for the Scarborough and Whitby Railway to carry a single track line over the River Esk and valley near Whitby, as well as crossing the Esk Valley Railway, and Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway. Due to its situation close to the sea the design avoided the use of iron, using brick and cement construction; the design was based on the Saltburn Viaduct. Construction began in October 1882 and was complete by October 1884; two men fell from the piers during construction, but recovered. The resident engineer was Charles Arthur Rowlandson, the contractors were John Waddell and Sons.

The viaduct is a 13-arch structure, 305 yd (279 m) long, with the rail level reaching 120 ft (37 m) high. The foundations on land were excavated to the level of rock, and formed from slag based cement. The river foundations were excavated in brick lined wells. The river foundation excavations were complicated by large oak trees found embedded in the river that required divers for manual removal. Piers 5,7,8 and 9 had triple foundations, connected above the water level by two semicircular arches. Three of the piers in the river are skewed so as not to deflect the tidal flow (the River Esk is tidal as far as Ruswarp upstream).

The main arches are 55 to 65 ft (17 to 20 m) wide, and 27 ft 6 in (8.38 m) high, made of bricks seven deep, 2 ft 9 in (0.84 m). The width between the parapets is 14 ft 6 in (4.42 m) on straight sections.

Services on the line ended in March 1965 as a result of the Beeching Report.

The viaduct became grade II listed in 1972.In 2000 much of the former line and the viaduct were opened to the public. By 2006 parts of the brickwork had become unsafe due to spalling, and the parts of the outer layer were replaced. As of 2012 the viaduct is part of the 'Scarborough to Whitby Rail Trail', also promoted as the "Scarborough to Whitby Cinder Track", a cycle route.

The viaduct is mentioned in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula:

The little river, the Esk, runs through a deep valley, which broadens out as it comes near the harbour. A great viaduct runs across, with high piers, through which the view seems somehow further away than it really is.
