I’m incredibly proud to be telling the story of the incredible partnership between Nat Herreshoff the designer of some of the greatest yachts ever built and Charlie Barr who captained 3 of Herreshoffs creations to America’s cup victories. I’ll be telling this story with Alastair Purves the great great grandson of Charlie himself. The talk is on July 23rd at the Herreshoff museum where I’ll be showing new work inspired by this story. A couple of concepts I’m working on for this weekends colour sketches. The first explores he start of race 2 of the Long Is series that brought the J Class together for the first time. This concept shows the new j class cup boats Weetamoe, Enterprise and Whirlwind all on stbd making for the Connecticut shore whilst the two older boats go on port and head over to The Long Is shore in the hope of a stronger breeze. The second concept I want to try will be a drone shot of Weetamoe with some nice lighting on her windward qtr lighting up her wake and casting a nice show fwd.

Reliance 1903 America’s Cup Race 1. Oil on canvas 26x52 inches. Reliance feeling the breeze begins to power up on the first windward leg of Race 1 of the 1903 America’s Cup again sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock 111. I find models a great aid it finding those angles you could not get into normally. For this painting I built a large model of Reliance that and helped me to discover this wide angle close in view with Reliance’s bowsprit thrusting lance like over the viewers shoulder showing all her power.

A fun weekend playing with concepts for new works based on the second race the j class raced on Long Island sound in 1930 in preparation for sir Thomas Liptons 5th challenge for the America’s Cup with Shamrock V. First I plotted out the race noting wind direction point of sail and sun position. From this a did a number of quick thumbnails from which a did the quick colour sketches. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts as to which I should paint first, colour sketch 1,2 or 3?

My painting wall is filling up with various studies for new work. After a year on larger format work I’m really enjoying the freedom these small works give me. Below the paintings is a model of the J Class yacht Enterprise winner of the 1930 America’s Cup that I’m currently building as reference for future paintings

Never did I imagine when I left my full time career in Engineering to pursue the dream of being a professional artist painting the subjects I love that one day my name would be in the same show with so many of the artists whose work and careers gave me such confidence and belief that it could be done. I owe many of these people so much.

The past couple of weeks have all been about details and rigging. Getting the details correct is so important and one of my favourite parts of the process. The next couple of weeks is all about modelling and refining all those details.
