Had fun this weekend on this 8x12 study of Weetamoe racing Rainbow. I’m seeing how much action I can pack into a small scale whilst keeping it loose. I’m learning so much from these. Next onto sails and detailing. Shane Couch

Continuing to develop my studies. Today I’ve been working on my 8.5x15 inch study of Whirlwind one of the original J class yachts built to defend the 1930 America’s Cup against Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock v. I love painting these close in views as you really get to know the personality of the subject yachts. Whirlwind designed by Francis Herreshoff. Today I’ve been developing the water and deck houses. Lots to do especially modelling and detailing the sails. My model has come in really useful for this as it gives so much information regarding reflections etc. Shane Couch

Been working on these small 8x12 colour studies and wondering which I should think about progressing to a larger format. I’d appreciate your thoughts. You’ll notice I’ve developed my clouds more in these than normal, I’d be interested if they add or detract from the scene? Your feedback is invaluable Shane Couch

My table top j class fleet is ready and I’ve made good progress on the hulls of all the original Js that will be my reference for close in work.
I’m excited to be beginning the project that will probably define my career and one that I’ve been working towards for many years. Everything I’ve done and the skills I’ve learnt have been to tell this story. If you visit my website you will find a brief history of the j class that will form the foundation of the project that will ultimately form a book. I hope you all follow along on what I anticipate to be a 3 or 5 year project. Shane Couch

One of the highlights of my recent trip was being invited to tour the model room at the Herreshoff Museum. This room contains Al of Nat Herreshoffs original half models carved by his own hand. As an engineer it was a privilege to see the equipment capt Nat used to take off the measurements from which his great yachts where built. I was particularly overwhelmed being able to get so close to the original half models carved by of Reluance. This is one of those experiences I’ll never forget. I must say a very special thanks to Bill Lynn who opened the doors for me and for giving me such special access. Shane Couch Herreshoff Marine Museum Charlie Barr Foundation Thomsen Fine Art
