What can you actually expect when you book a photo session with me?

Obviously, good photos. That’s a given. But there’s a lot more to a photo session than me turning up with a camera.

Pretty much all of my clients (with the rare exception) tell me how much they hate being photographed. I get it, I'm not a big fan of being in front of the camera either.

My goal is to help you to feel comfortable. I want you to know what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. And I want you to leave the session thinking, 'That was actually fun!'

To me, that all starts with planning. We talk about your business, what you want people to see and understand about you, where the images will be used, and how you want to be portrayed.

The photo session itself is easy once we've done the planning. I'll guide you through every step, where to stand/sit, what to do, how to move, and I'll keep taking and asking questions to distract you.

When we’re finished, I want you to leave with three things:

A little more confidence in front of the camera. The feeling that you actually enjoyed your photo session. And of course, images that actually work for you and your business.

Give me a shout if you'd like to have a chat about your next photo session.

It was the Foghouse Spirits team’s turn in front of my camera last week.

Mike and his wife Toni opened Foghouse in Inverurie a year ago and, together with business development and events manager Annette, they’ve created an amazing space that has become so much more than somewhere to grab a drink or a coffee.

In their own words
The Foghouse isn't just a bar, it's a modern-day sanctuary for those who seek more from their glass. Created by the team behind the Inverurie Whisky Shop, our coffee, whisky, and wine bar brings people, stories, and flavour together in a calm, curated setting.

The Foghouse is my go-to spot for meetings in Inverurie. If you haven't visited yet, pop in for a coffee and a cake (or a drink).

Last week in selfies :-)

I started the week with my annual VIP client Rosee Elliott, to create a fresh set of brand images to support her new venture, Moving Mountains.

Uniwipe & UltraGrime | Nuvik UK had me back for another shoot with their brilliant wet wipes. This time, we were let loose in one of the labs at the University of Aberdeen. I was a bit like a kid in a candy shop, one of the best locations ever!

There was also a brilliant open-top bus tour around Aberdeen with the KLT Networking gang. Great to catch up with Andrew Smith, Jeanette Lowe, Kalpa Tan, Julie Nairn, Gail Henderson, Gerry Stuart, and of course our new group manager Andrew Maher.

And to finish the week, I headed south on Sunday to St. Andrews and Dundee to capture The Kiltwalk for Johnstone Carmichael.

A little bit of behind-the-scenes from a shoot onboard Viking Reach at Peterhead Port Authority.

Drone footage is a pretty cool way to see yourself at work! Big thanks to Craig for coming along to this job and capturing some great drone footage.

I have worked with Alastair and the team at Reach Subsea for a few years now. It has been great to get to know the team and be involved in a few really interesting projects.

It's always a pleasure to work with the team at Northwood North East!

A couple of weeks ago, I met with Laura, Matt, and Juliet in Inverurie. We went for a wander around town to create some new images for their library.

I've been working with Northwood for a few years now, and this is exactly why I love working with businesses on a retainer basis. We don't need to cram absolutely everything in one shoot. Instead, we can plan throughout the year around what's happening in the business and the images they need at the time.

It also means I get to know the team really well (and vice versa), so shoots are very relaxed and fun. It gives them a constantly up-to-date library of images, rather than having to reuse the same few photos every time.

If you are looking to buy or sell a house, or you're a landlord looking for a fabulous team to look after your property, give Northwood a shout. They are brilliant.

Have you been following my page for a while? Perhaps liking the odd post. Thinking, 'I really should get some new photos'...
..and then talking yourself out of it because you don't like having your photo taken?

I have the perfect opportunity for you! My Headshot Day at Foghouse Spirits in Inverurie on 13th August is probably the easiest way to dip your toe in. They are short and sweet sessions, a smaller investment, and you'll still come away with professional images that look like you.

If you've been waiting for a sign, this might just be it. ;-)

Does your profile photo still look like you?

I often meet people who tell me they keep putting off having new headshots because they don't enjoy being in front of the camera. And I can relate to that, I don't particularly enjoy being photographed either!

The good news is that being photographed isn't actually that bad, you don't need to know how to pose or what to do. That's what you've got me for! I aim to make the whole experience of being in front of the camera as relaxed and painless as possible, and most people leave saying it was much easier (and more enjoyable) than they expected.

I'm running a Headshot Day at Foghouse Spirits in Inverurie on Wednesday 13th August (thank you to Mike and Annette for hosting). It's ideal if you're self-employed, job hunting, updating LinkedIn, or need a professional photo that actually looks like you.

I've only got a limited number of sessions available. If you'd like more information or would like to book a slot, I'll pop the link in the comments.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments or by message.

Fun Fact Friday!

What's the most unexpected job you've ever had?

Many many moons ago, in my 20s and long before I started my photography business, I worked with horses full-time, producing, schooling, and competing young horses at dressage and showjumping yards. It was a great time, I travelled all across Europe to competitions, got to ride amazing horses, and met many incredible people.

A very different world compared to commercial photography, although both involve building trust, being patient, and expecting the unexpected!

These days I spend much less time in the saddle, but horses are still a big part of my life.

One of my favourite things about working with my Annual VIP clients is seeing their business evolve.

Last month I met up with Isabel Addison from Legacy Celebrant for her next brand photo session, this time at the beautiful Braemar Castle. We couldn't have asked for better weather. Sunshine, blue skies, and of course a stunning backdrop.

Every time we work together, we create something different, building a library of images over time reflecting what's happening in Isabel's business at that moment.

It also means we can make the most of different seasons, locations, and ideas, keeping Isabel's photography fresh and relevant. We had a lovely morning catching up, exploring the grounds and, of course, creating new photos for her website and social media.

I'm already looking forward to seeing where our next session takes us.

If you are tired of reusing the same handful of images all the time. Give me a buzz, I'd love to have a chat.

One of the things I love most about my job is the variety.

Commercial photography can take me into some very different industries and environments.

In June, I spent a lot of time photographing corporate headshot days for larger organisations across Scotland, showing people that being photographed doesn't hurt and can actually be fun.

Last week looked a bit different. I spent a couple of days at Peterhead Port Authority and Port of Aberdeen photographing vessels for one of my regular clients. I also had a drone pilot with me in Peterhead, to take some drone footage.

I'm not very good on boats (I get very motion sick), but thankfully we didn't leave the harbour, so all was well. I learnt a lot about the maritime industry over the last couple of days and definitely have a newfound appreciation for the crew who can spend weeks or sometimes even months at sea. It's a whole different world that most of us never get to see.

I even got to visit the bridge, which I was excited about. I loved the shiny wooden floor and the amazing all-round view from up there.

The hard hat and high-vis selfie absolutely had to be done. ;-)
