•Barn Swallow•

One of my favourite summer migrants and a sure sign of the changing seasons is the barn swallow. These birds migrate each year from sub Saharan Africa all the way to the UK. This individual went the extra mile and came all the way up to the Isle of Mull! They’re usually impossible to photograph as they’re incredibly fast, but this one perched briefly while collecting nest material which allowed me to fire off a quick shot before it took to the skies again.

Looking back at my photos from this amazing dipper nest in Edinburgh. I spent a lot of time trying to get an image with the dipper reflected in the water. Unfortunately it’s quite hard when the water’s flowing but this was one of my better attempts. I recently checked on the nest and the chicks have fledged, well done parents!! I’m very much looking forward to heading back next year to see the dippers raise a new family.

Another shot of the same female from my last post. This was taken on our last day with her. We spotted her swimming 20 m or so offshore and set up on the beach about 50 m from where she was. As she swam down towards us, she spotted us and, much to our surprise, turned and swam straight into shore right in front of us! She spent about 10 minutes sunning herself on this rock before continuing down the coast. An amazing encounter to round off our time on Mull.

•Eurasian Otter•

This female otter had been hunting up and down the shore for a while (we had been told by other photographers). When we set up on the shore, she took a much needed rest from hunting and decided to take a nap right in front of us, falling asleep until the tide eventually swallowed the rock she had lay down on and she carried on down the shore. Completely unbothered by our presence, a very special encounter.

Spring has definitely sprung, which has me thinking about all the new life around us at this time of year. This family of fox cubs was the highlight of my spring a few years ago. Getting to watch the cubs grow and learn was a real privilege. Hopefully I’ll find another den like this one day.

The dipper parents are busy providing food for their chicks at the moment. In the hour that I was there they must have made more than 20 food deliveries each to the nest. This individual was hunting just in front of where I was sat, allowing me to get some unique shots of the dipper in the water.
