A little later than desired, but my image of the month for August is finally up. This lovely male Yellowhammer was photographed in the Picos de Europa in Northwest Spain.

I really enjoyed finding a variety of Saxifrage species on my various tours this year. This one is a species I hadn’t seen before, Saxifraga exarata from the Vercors in southeast France.

Shoutout to the cameo by a gorgeous female jumping spider in the corner too 😆 I didn’t spot her until afterwards when I took some separate photos, not realising until I processed this one at home that she had made an appearance much earlier!

A superb find in the hotel garden on our Picos de Europa holiday for Greenwings Wildlife Holidays last month - a Fiery Clearwing moth, one of several seen over the week in the end. A rare species in the UK limited to coastal areas here, while a little less restricted on the continent, still a special find for me and a stunning insect.

It’s time to share another butterfly find from Croatia. This beautiful and tiny Nickerl’s Fritillary (Melitaea aurelia) was hunkered down in cool weather on a Bug Orchid (Anacamptis coriophora), one of several hundred in this particular meadow. The same could probably have been said for butterflies too as in a moment of sunshine, they all lifted from the grass to reveal a cloud of colourful diversity that had been sitting round our feet, and while we’d found quite a few, there were many more than we’d initially noticed. They disappeared back into their hiding spots among the meadow vegetation just as quickly as they had appeared when the sun went back behind the clouds a few minutes later, but those few minutes had been magical - albeit impossible to photograph a thing!

Specially for Erica whom I gleefully told about finding this superb Robberfly when I saw her Global Birdfair because as my fly idol, of course I thought of her when I found this beast in Croatia! This is the stunning Pogonosoma maroccanum - can’t believe a creature this gorgeous doesn’t have a common name. Maybe we should come up with one?

In a brief break between tours I’m sharing my image of the month for June: a Duke of Burgundy, Hamearis lucina, photographed recently in the Vercors, southeast France.

We seemed to see this species with regularity in the region and it was a delight to have multiple photographic opportunities but I think this is my favourite image - taken with my long lens crouched at knee height as it perched in a sapling among long grass on the edge of a woodland glade.

Life astounds me with its tenacity. A Thick-leaved Stonecrop, Sedum dasyphyllum flowering in a wall where there is an almost imperceptibly small source of nutrients for it to survive caught my eye recently. It was made all the more poignant for its location, for the wall was round a memorial for boys and men massacred during the Second World War, their families, friends, neighbours and comrades will have had to show a tenacity of their own.

Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched? Spotted while waiting for a taxi to the airport at 5:30 the other morning… a lovely Roe Buck, photographed from a friend’s doorstep!

It’s been a while… I’ve been busier than anticipated away from socials (sorry - not sorry!). Anyway, here’s my image of the month for May, a bonny cricket nymph in Sicilian sunshine. It seems that Sicily is always hopping with them in the spring and they make for lovely photographic subjects. I forgot to note which Asteraceae this was at the time, but it was like sunshine on a stem so I’m just going to enjoy that ☀️
