I recently had the pleasure of photographing the renovation of the new I.T.S (Flavours, Fragrances & Aroma Suppliers) office in Newbury, which was completed by LGI Designs. They not only designed the interiors but managed the entire project.

Having not worked in an office environment for several years, I was genuinely impressed by this space—it’s an office I would love to work in!

The transformation over a few months from the old setup to the new one was remarkable. I had never seen an office featured a bar, let alone one that has been spray-painted by graffiti artists.

Have You Ever Wondered What a Mobile Headshot Studio Might Look Like?

Every office/home or work space is different, sometimes it might be industrial, other times a purpose built office. Recently I was blessed with this space, an empty office without people!

In fact the company I was about to photograph were in the office up stairs and this was a vacant office space on the ground floor which I was kindly lent for a few hours.

This shows what a mobile studio setup might look like, a small backdrop, 2 lights, the main light has a softbox diffuser to soften the light which is very complimentary for headshots, the back light just adds a little pop of light to fill shadows and a laptop which is connected to my camera via a cable.

The reason I like to connect my camera to a laptop whilst taking headshots is review the images in real time, this means you can shortlist your favourite shots and even let me know if you have any retouching instructions.

Once the pictures have been taken we can even add a different background afterwards if required.

People Photography.

Before I decided to put down roots and specialize in Headshot & Business Branding Photography, I spent 6 years working for an expedition company. This taught me many life skills which were not that obvious at the time.

I’ve always loved meeting new people but when you’re travelling most days you have little time to break down barriers when meeting locals from very different cultures, backgrounds, and religions.

Although this may not seem very relevant to a Headshot & Business Branding Photography Business it has helped me hugely.

In the corporate world of photographing people that are exceptionally busy needs a special set of skills. You might think you have hours to produce a few great shots but in reality, this doesn’t normally happen. This is where breaking down the barriers comes in. Most of taking a great headshot is so much more than lighting, composition, giving guidance on angles, whether to smile or not, it’s making your subject relax especially if they are uncomfortable or shy in front of your camera.

Arts University Plymouth.

I don't cover many graduation events each year but when I do, I absolutely love it.

Working with like minded people, in my case other photographers gives me a chance to catch up and ask all those questions that only another photographer would know, whether it be technical, business, social media or just football, someone will have a valued opinion.

It also gives me a chance to experience & work at some amazing locations.

These shots were taken with my iPhone thanks to JP the lighting manager at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth who showed me what our photography studios looked like from his lighting desk 4 stories up.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN YOUR NOT WORKING?

I like to step outside my comfort zone at least twice a year because it exhilarates me yet it scares me to death. As I've got older my priorities have changed, the consequences have increased...what happens if I have an accident? Who will pay my bills?

To a lot of people having their photo taken is the same, it scares them to death or it's just outside their comfort zone.

As a photographer with over 25 years experience my job is to help & guide you through the whole process.

You might be thinking - what do I wear, I don't like my smile, I need to lose weight, where do I go to have my photo taken, what about hair or makeup, do I need studio shots or location shots?

Great Headshots Made Easy

With over 20 years experience of taking portraits of people the most common sentence I hear is “ I'm not photogenic.

In my opinion every one has a great photo in them, sometimes you just need a little help to find it.

Occasionally when I talk to a client, I'm thinking this should be easy and as soon as the camera comes up something changes, that natural smile disappears, the shoulders tense up and we suddenly get pursed lips.

For most of my life I used to do the same until my partner kept surprising me with her selfies of us together without warning me and to my amazement we both looked great, my smile was good and my massive phobia of showing my teeth was totally misplaced.

Top Tips For Interior Photography.

As a specialist Headshot & Personal Branding Photographer I have been asked if I do interior marketing photography...the answer was yes of course.

Here are a few tips that I’ve learnt over the years.

1: Consult with your client whenever possible.
Sometimes, you walk in and you know right away, you just feel it...this is the perfect picture, but sometimes you may need to investigate a little bit more.

2: Avoid using wide-angle lenses.
Wide angle lenses can cause distortions, which can disrupt the harmony of the image and give a false sense of the space being photographed. In architecture, lines must be straight.

3: Natural light is king.
Even when you do add artificial lights, you still want to pay attention to how natural light works in the space, so that the light you’re adding makes sense.

4: Keep lights to a minimum unless there’s a reason for them to be on. You don’t need to turn on a lamp if sunlight is streaming in through the window already.

5: Don’t feel like you need to keep everything in focus all the time.
Blurring elements of the photo can add dimension, change the mood, or focus the viewer’s attention somewhere specific.

6: A good prop could makes a difference.
Every space is different, but even in spaces that lend themselves to minimalism, propping can help tell the story, even if it’s just a few touches.

7: Don’t wait to do in post production what you can do in the room.
Retouching costs money and often takes much longer than just addressing the issue head-on before you start shooting.

8: Don’t always let things get too perfect.
Rooms are meant to be lived in, so try not to get too precious about your set-up.

9: Never stop learning.
Remember that photography is a lifelong journey, you’re not just going to pick up a camera and be the next big thing right away. You must have a passion for it.
