Wycombe Photographic Society Founded in 1938, WPS is a group of enthusiasts, from beginners to experts, young and older, male and female, whose common interest is photography.

Wycombe Photographic Society is a group of enthusiasts, from beginners to experts, young and older, male and female, whose common interest is photography. The activities of the Club embrace all types of still photography: digital and prints in both colour and monochrome. Like many groups the last few months have been challenging in many ways. We are no different and as such we have had to re-struc

ture the club and take a slightly different direction to evolve into a successful Society which was founded in 1938. Some of the changes are drastic but the fundamental objectives are to support the development of photographers and to share and enjoy each other's personal work in an environment which is fun, relaxed and collaborative. For many years the programmes of many clubs such as WPS have been driven by competitions which in the past was an opportunity to see work from other photographers within the club and from outside. Today we are surrounded by images via websites and social media, so are competitions as relative as they once were or are they detrimental to the development of photographers? However, it is important for photographers to show their work and receive feedback which we will provide. Our programme will be based with non-competitive themed assignments, speakers in their specialist fields and workshops all to help spread knowledge and techniques. CHANGES MADE FOR 2021 - 2022
• New venue for our meetings: Hughenden Valley Village Hall.
• Meetings to be held on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month.
• Zoom meeting to be held on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

11th March 2026 Digital Workshop

The idea is for members to try their hand at post processing this particular image prior to the digital workshop that Jan is running on the 11th March.

The challenge (should you choose to accept it) is to downloadand process an image we have shared to members, producing your interpretation of the RAW file. . On Wednesday 11th we will look at all the images and discuss the different approaches and cover some tips and tricks to help with processing.

Wednesday 11th February 2026 :Talk by Paul Mitchell FRPS
We are delighted to welcome our good friend Paul Mitchell FRPS back to WPS.
Paul’s achievements include winning the Sunday Times Choice Award in the prestigious Landscape Photographer of the Year competition in 2013, being Overall Winner of the Urban category in 2015, and receiving commendations in both 2017 and 2018. He has also gained accolades in the Outdoor Photographer of the Year and International Garden Photographer of the Year competitions. Most notably, in March 2022, Paul was awarded the RHS Gold Medal and Best in Show at the Botanical Art and Photography Show held at the Saatchi Gallery.
However, Paul is perhaps best known for his evocative woodland images from Burnham Beeches, Savernake Forest, and the New Forest, among many other locations. He is a member of Arena and a past Chairman of the RPS Landscape and Visual Arts Panels.

7th January 2026 8pm Hughenden Valley Village Hall

Talk by Chris Palmer “Diversions”
Primarily I am a landscape photographer, having a particular affection for the natural world. However, there are times when I find myself in other varied locations by circumstance or opportunity, and this lecture provides me with a chance to show different aspects and styles of work when landscape photography isn't possible.
This is a varied lecture featuring images taken in urban locations, of intimate details, and some of my creative and artistic work too.
About Chris Palmer:
I've been actively involved in club photography since
1979. I gained an Associates distinction of the RPS with
darkroom monochrome prints, a Fellowship with digital
prints, serve as Chair on the RPS Visual Art (A & F) Panel,
and assess on the Landscape panel too.
A busy national PAGB judge and popular lecturer, I have
visited more than 285 different camera clubs, and judged
many regional, national and international exhibitions.
I hold a Distinction of the PAGB and was pleased to receive
an APAGB award for my services to photography. I have
also had success and gained awards in international
exhibitions while earning my AFIAP and EFIAP distinctions.
I am delighted to be a member of the prestigious London
Salon. Now retired from working as an air traffic controller,
I am a member of Amersham Photographic Society.

The Greenwood Series Evenings
Since we introduced The Greenwood Series to our programme a couple of years ago, this project-based initiative has gone from strength to strength. Last year, it became clear that a single evening wasn't enough to accommodate everyone who wanted to share their work…so this season, we expanded to two evenings. Remarkably, even that may not be enough!
This year, thirteen members will be presenting their projects. At the start of the season, participants were invited to develop a project of their choice. We had a glimpse of early progress back in October…and now it's time to see the results.
The second evening of these projects is Wednesday 4th June. The first evening was a fascinating range of projects, from glass, to football, to UK locations. We hope to see you at this week's meeting which is the penultimate of the season.

Next week, Wednesday 23rd May is our last themed evening of the season and is on 'Shop fronts'. This is an opportunity f...

Next meeting is 15th May 2025 – A Retrospective of Ray Higginbottom’s Photography
Some of you will have known Ray Higginbottom, who sadly passed away last year. This evening is an opportunity to celebrate his creative work, presented by his wife, Viv Blewitt.
Ray was an active member of the London Independent Photography Group and also a member of Chalfont & Gerrards Cross Camera Club. He was a tireless experimenter, driven by a desire to be creative and to inspire others.
It is important that the work of photographers—and the photographers themselves—are not forgotten. All too often, wonderful bodies of work disappear after a photographer passes on.
Brian Ridgley, who recently saw Viv’s presentation, strongly recommended we find space in the programme to share Ray’s work. Please come along to enjoy some remarkable images and learn more about this intriguing man.

You Want to Shoot Film? Studio Session & Film Loading Challenge

You may not be particularly interested in film photography, but this promises to be another informative and fun evening where everyone can get involved. We’ll be discussing all things film…the equipment, the process, and how to create digital files from silver film. We’ll also explore different printing options, including hybrid prints shot on film and digitally printed.

One of our newer members, Matt Powell, has taken the plunge into film photography. He’ll be doing a live demonstration, shooting portraits of members using his medium-format camera, and then developing the film in the hall…a fascinating insight into the craft of film photography!

We will also be joined by Roger Longdin, who will be bringing along his 10” x 8” large format camera and some of his incredible darkroom prints.

For those who enjoy a challenge, I’ll be bringing some spare developing tanks and old film to test how quickly you can load a film onto its spiral while blindfolded! Since film loading must be done in complete darkness, this will be a real test of dexterity!

CACC Championship Results

We are affiliated with the Chilterns Association of Camera Clubs (CACC), which supports societies like ours by providing access to speakers, advice, assessors, and liability insurance.

Across the UK, there are fifteen regional Federations, with approximately 900 affiliated clubs and around 30,000 individual members.

Each Federation holds annual Print and Projected Image Championships, from which two clubs are selected to represent them in the national Inter-Club Championships. Additionally, any club that reaches the final in the previous year is automatically invited back, meaning that around 38 clubs will compete in this prestigious event in Blackburn later this year.

On Sunday, we took part in the CACC Print Championships at Amersham Community Centre. As a small club, we were definitely the underdogs, but we put on a fantastic performance! Going into the competition, Amersham PS and Watford CC were the favourites. As I kept track of the scores, I could see that we were edging ahead of Watford, but the battle with Amersham was incredibly tight. With just three prints left to be judged, we were trailing by a single point. Then, our next print scored the maximum 15 points against Amersham’s 14...bringing us level.

The final two prints from each club all scored 13, meaning we finished in an incredible dead heat with Amersham PS.
While we just missed out on being outright winners by a single point, the real achievement is that both clubs have now qualified to represent CACC in the national championships.

This result was only possible thanks to the outstanding contributions of our members, demonstrating the real strength and talent within our Society...a truly brilliant achievement!

So, what’s next? In October, we’ll be heading to Blackburn for the Print Championships, and in the meantime, we will be looking for potential images to use.
