Poor Ida. Worth a share so you know what to do if this should ever happen to your dog..

Staff dog Ida is a lurcher who is 6 in July. Previously of good health, last night I was woken by banging which I instinctively knew was one of my dogs having a seizure so I thought I would share this experience as it can be very frightening to see. I will outline what to do if your pet ever has a seizure.

Toxins such as chocolate, rat poison and slug pellets can cause seizures but Ida had not had access to any toxins.

Ida was on the landing sleeping - there was nothing around like furniture - the first thing is to move anything your pet could injure themselves on, clear a space around them.

Seizures seem like they last a long time but are usually quite short, if someone is near ask them to set a timer on their mobile. Any seizure that lasts more than 2 minutes needs veterinary treatment right away, or if they have had a previous seizure within 24 hours.

Keep all noise to a minimum and dim any artificial lighting. I gently spoke to Ida - itโ€™s really distressing to see but very important to stay calm. If you can video your pet - this provides useful information for the vet.

Once they are out of the seizure they may still paddle, seem confused, vocalise, excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth, and pass urine. Ida was very vocal for a few seconds which soon changed to a whine, hypersalivating, and passed some urine. She seemed very spaced out and confused. I didnโ€™t touch her at this point and kept a bit of a distance as they can on occasion be aggressive. I just spoke calmly to reassure her.

It is important not to restrain them, or try to bring them round. Stay away from their mouth and donโ€™t cover them up, because they can over heat.

After the seizure Ida did a bit of pacing, she seemed unsettled. She was very thirsty and once she appeared back to her normal self I gave her a small amount of food, as they are often very hungry after one of these episodes. I made sure she was back to her usual self and not confused or unsettled before I fed her.

Ida will now be having a full check over and some blood tests to make sure she is in good health.
The photo is of her today feeling back to her usual self ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿด What do you think?
I came across this image whilst scrolling through my catalogue.
I took it a a few years ago, itโ€™s a double exposure produced completely in camera (ie not done in photoshop)
Itโ€™s fun to experiment with different techniques, but
what do you think?
Constructive feedback welcomed:

Do you like the concept as art? For the horse owners amongst you, If you were having a photoshoot of your horse, would this style appeal to you?
What about dogs too?

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’”It's always very sad to hear of a beloved pet's death, and my heart goes out to Beth and Alex on the recent loss of Biscuit. Having had the privilege of meeting Biscuit for his portrait session 2 years ago, I couldn't believe that this little chap was actually 17 - he was bouncing around like a dog half his age!

Knowing that the pictures they see every day are a source of comfort and a constant reminder of the unconditional love they shared means the world to me. It truly underlines why I do what I do โ€“ to create lasting memories that offer a glimmer of light and comfort during such profound sadness.

Biscuit was clearly adored, and his spirit lives on in the beautiful moments they all shared together. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿพ

Adder bites are most common from June to August; would you know what to do if your pet ever encountered one? ๐Ÿ

Although rare, it's a good idea to get clued up on what to do if your pet is ever bitten by a snake - especially adders, the UK's only venomous snake species. Usually, adders aren't a threat, but they might defend themselves if a curious pooch gets too close.

If your pet gets bitten by an adder, you must treat it as an emergency by following the first aid advice below and contacting your vet immediately. Cats can also suffer from adder bites (although it's less common), and the same first aid should apply.

You can reduce the chance of encountering adders by avoiding areas known for them; staying out of long grass, woodland, moorland, and along the coast (sand dunes/coastal paths); and researching any unfamiliar areas for adder 'hot-spots' before walking your dog ๐Ÿ•

[Visual description: An infographic showing photos of an adder and its markings. Alongside this is the following text: Adder bites in dogs. If your dog has been bitten by an adder, their symptoms will depend on where the bite is and where the venom spreads to. If the venom stays in the tissues around the bite, it will cause pain and swelling, but if it spreads further and gets into the bloodstream, it can cause much more serious problems, such as damage to the liver, kidneys, and nervous system. First aid for a snake bite. 1. If you see the snake, try to remember what it looks like or take a photo from a distance. Do not try to find the snake, get close to it, touch it, or harm it. Adders are a protected species, so it's illegal to hurt or kill them, and they can bite people if disturbed. 2. Keep your dog as still as possible to prevent the venom from spreading around their body. 3. Leave the bite alone, don't apply a bandage or tourniquet. 4. Call your vet to let them know you are coming down to the practice. 5. If possible, bring a car to your dog or, depending on their weight, carry them to it. Snake bites are an emergency - if your dog has been bitten, follow our first aid advice and take them to a vet ASAP.]
