I absolutely love my job and couldn't envisage myself doing anything else. I took up photography late in life (in my 30's in fact) which given I grew up as a photographers model for my mum who was a wedding and portrait photographer, and my whole childhood is told through images which I treasure, it is an odd thing that I never thought to pick up a camera sooner. It was a flippant comment from a friend about how good I was at taking photos sparked the intrigue which FAST developed into a passion and a business. I always saw myself as an artist but I always thought it would be paintbrushes, however in greek, photography literally means 'Painting with Light' so I guess you could say my inner artist was finally set free.

I would love to say newborn is my absolute passion, it used to be until I started training in other photography fields like child and family fine art portraiture. So I now have to from the heart say my last photoshoot is generally my favourite - its a changing and ever-evolving thing, which is why I adore my job. I could not be anything, other than a photographer.

In October 2018 I gained my Licentiate Accreditation and Newborn Certificate from the Master Photographers Association which was an absolute honour and a full circle for me as the first trainer I worked with was indeed Ray Lowe the Chairman of the MPA. I can now proudly say I have won 26 awards and featured as the image of the day with the Guild of Photographers twice.

You've slept three hours in two-hour chunks, there's milk on your only clean top, and your newborn session is tomorrow morning.

Deep breath, mama. I've got you.

Here's the bit nobody tells you. You don't need to prepare anything. Not really. The studio at Brickendonbury Estate is kept warm and quiet, the wraps and bonnets and baskets are already laid out, and I've got everything your little one could possibly need waiting for them. Dummies if you use them, a heater for the changing area, soft music, the lot.

What you actually need to bring is yourselves. That's it. Feed baby right before you leave the house, throw the spare muslins in the bag you've already half-packed, and come as you are. Tracksuit, no makeup, hair in a bun. Honestly, I mean it. You'll be cuddled up on the sofa with a cuppa while I do the fiddly bits.

This session isn't another thing on your list. It's two or three hours where someone else holds the plan, the temperature, the timing, and the tiny details, while you sit in a warm room and just watch your baby be small. That's the whole point of it 🤍

If you're booked in with me this week, breathe. If you're expecting and reading this thinking you'll never cope, DM me or visit www.oliviachristina.co.uk and let's get you penciled in while you've still got the headspace.

12 years of specialist safety training.

That is what sits behind every single pose, every wrap, every gentle movement in my studio. Not a weekend workshop. Not a YouTube tutorial.

Twelve years of learning how a newborn's body works. What is safe. And what only looks safe.

When your baby curls into a new position and stays settled, it's because every angle has been considered. Skin colour, breathing, the way their little weight is supported.

You won't notice any of it. You'll just see your baby, completely at peace, in a portrait that looks effortless.

That's exactly how it should feel.

It's not magic. It's 12 years of specialist training and a genuine, deep love of what I do 🤍

A newborn session means handing your days-old baby to someone who will hold them in specific poses for up to three hours.

That's a big deal. And you deserve to know exactly what to ask before you book.

I've spent 12+ years training in specialist newborn safety and I'm a certified Master Photographer. Every single session I run is baby-led, which means your little one sets the pace, not me.

But not every photographer works this way.

Swipe through for 3 questions you should be asking ANY newborn photographer before you hand your baby over 👆

A good photographer won't just answer these questions. They'll be glad you asked.

I am awol at the moment as my daughter and I make a hasty flight and flew to Cyprus to say goodbye to my Yiayia.

I didn’t want to write that. But I got on that plane bracing myself for the hardest kind of farewell — the kind where you’re holding someone’s hand and quietly trying to memorise everything about them.

What I wasn’t prepared for was her.

This incredible woman, in her 90s, who had barely been able to speak — watching her come back to life in front of us was something I will carry with me forever. Full conversations. Opinions. People-watching and judging (absolutely her right). Jokes. Colour flooding back into her skin and light returning to her eyes. She lifted her leg to show us she could. She showed off.

Love did that. I genuinely believe it with everything I have. Love healed her, even just for those moments.

But the moment I will never, ever forget — she looked at me. Confused at first, searching my face. And then something shifted. Recognition. Emotion. And she said:

“I remember. YOU love me.”

I was undone.

This woman gave me my taste for travel. She created a safe space for me when my childhood world was in chaos. When everything around me felt unstable and loud and uncertain, she was calm. She was steady. She was home.

She is my stability. She always has been.

I carry her name. My daughter carries her name too. That’s not a coincidence — that’s legacy. That’s love passed forward.

I truly hope this wasn’t goodbye. I’m holding onto the possibility that it was just a slightly dramatic holiday visit, and that she’ll still be there next time, watching everyone and forming opinions she absolutely will share.

Come back to us, Yiayia. We’re not done loving you yet. 🤍🌿

Your baby at day 5 and your baby at day 11 are two completely different newborns.

I know that sounds dramatic but after 13 years of photographing tiny humans I can tell you it's one of the biggest things expecting parents don't realise. That first 5-10 day window is genuinely magical for portraits. Babies are sleepier, curlier, and so much more settled into those soft tucked-up poses. By day 11 they're more alert, their limbs start stretching out, and those dreamy sleepy setups become a lot trickier to achieve safely and comfortably.

So here's the checklist I give every parent around 34 weeks 🤍

Book your session while you're still pregnant. I keep flexible diary space for due dates but I can only do that if I know you're coming. Once baby arrives everything moves fast and last-minute availability is never guaranteed.

Have a rough idea of your style preferences before baby is here. Florals, neutral wraps, a specific colour palette. We can chat all of this through beforehand so the session feels calm and planned rather than rushed.

On the day, feed baby right before you come. A full tummy is my secret weapon for those peaceful curled-up poses. Warm layers for you too because I keep the studio toasty for little ones.

And the thing most parents forget? Your own outfits for family portraits. Even if you only want a couple of shots together, those end up being the ones you treasure most. Trust me on that one.

I've photographed hundreds of newborns at my studio at Brickendonbury Estate, Hertford, and every single session reminds me why that early window matters so much. Those tiny fingers curled under their chin, the weight of them perfectly still on a soft wrap. It changes week by week.

If you're expecting and thinking about a newborn session, get in touch now rather than later. DM me or visit www.oliviachristina.co.uk

Due in June? Your baby's best newborn photos need to happen between days 5 and 10.

That's a tiny window. And June is one of the busiest birth months in the UK, which means slots fill fast.

After 13 years and hundreds of newborn sessions, I can tell you the families who sort their photography before baby arrives are always the calmest ones afterwards. No scrambling, no stress, just one less thing on the list when you're deep in the newborn bubble.

So if your due date is coming up, here's what to think about now while you still have the headspace 🤍

Book your session in advance. I pencil in your due date and then we confirm the exact day once baby is here. That way your spot is secured without you having to think about it postpartum.

Choose your style. Floral wraps? Neutral tones? Simple and classic? Have a little browse of my portfolio and let me know what makes your heart sing. It makes the session so much smoother when we've already chatted about it.

Know that everything else is taken care of. I handle the props, the setup, the temperature, the soothing. You just bring baby and yourselves. That's it.

The early days are a blur of feeds and nappies and trying to remember which side you last fed from. Planning your session now means you won't even have to think about it when the time comes.

Your baby's first 10 days go by in a fog of feeds, nappy changes and zero sleep. I've photographed hundreds of newborns over 13 years and these are the 3 things I wish every parent sorted before their session!

Swipe through for the full tips, but here's the short version. Book while you're still pregnant (around week 30-34), feed baby right before you arrive so they're milk-drunk and sleepy, and wear dark loose clothing just in case of a poonami situation :)

A little prep makes all the difference and I promise you'll feel so much calmer walking in!

Most parents don't start looking for a newborn photographer until after baby arrives, and by then that perfect sleepy window is already halfway gone!

The sweet spot for newborn photos is days 5-10. That's when babies are at their sleepiest, most curly and settled, and will melt into those gorgeous little poses with those tiny fingers on show and soft squishy cheeks you just want to squish forever. After about two weeks they start to become much more alert and wiggly, which is still beautiful but it's a completely different session!

So here are 4 things I always tell my expecting mums and I wish every parent knew earlier:

Book while you're still pregnant. Seriously! I only take a limited number of newborns each month and the due date holds your spot, no stress if baby comes early or late, I work around them not the other way around.

The ideal age is days 5-10. I know it sounds SO early but trust me, hundreds of sessions in, this is when the magic happens. They're settled, they're sleepy, they curl into the most beautiful positions.

Sessions are completely baby-led. If baby needs a feed, we feed. If baby needs a cuddle, we cuddle. There is zero rushing, I let your little one set the pace and that's exactly how we get those dreamy peaceful images.

You don't need to bring a thing. I have everything here at the studio at Brickendonbury Estate in Hertford. All the wraps, props, blankets, outfits. You just bring baby and yourselves and I take care of the rest :)

If you're expecting and haven't booked yet, pop me a message! I'd love to chat and get your due date in the diary before spaces fill up.

Hertfordshire golden hour right now lasts nearly ninety minutes.

Late May evening light is something else. It sits low across the fields, turns everything warm and soft, and wraps around a bump like it was made for maternity portraits. I barely have to direct it. The sun does half the work for me 🤍

This is the window I wait for all year. The longest, softest golden light we get in Hertfordshire, stretching across open fields and filtering through the woodland edges until everything glows.

If you're expecting and you've been thinking about an outdoor maternity session, this is the moment. These evenings won't last forever and the light is at its absolute best right now.

Drop me a message and let's find your perfect evening ✨

Late May in Hertfordshire, the sun doesn't set until almost nine.

Between seven and eight, the light drops low and turns this soft, warm amber that wraps around everything it touches. Skin glows. Colours deepen. The whole landscape goes golden 🌅

For outdoor maternity sessions, this is the window I wait for all year. The golden hour lasts nearly a full 60 minutes right now, and the quality of light it produces simply doesn't exist in autumn or winter. It's low, it's warm, and it's impossibly flattering.

If you're in your third trimester, the next few weeks through mid-June are peak magic for an outdoor session. That beautiful bump deserves this light.

Drop me a message if you'd like to book before the window passes 🤍
