We recently had the privilege of working on a website commemorating the extraordinary life and legacy of Alyce Chaucer. Along with her husband, William de la Pole, Alyce founded God’s House in Ewelme in 1437, one of the oldest almshouse charities in England.
Born in 1404 at her family manor in Ewelme, Alyce was the granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer. She married William de la Pole, who later became the Duke of Suffolk, making her the Duchess of Suffolk. Alyce inherited the Ewelme manor from her father, Thomas, upon his death in 1434.
Tragically, William de la Pole was murdered in 1450 while on his way into exile. Alyce never remarried and remained in Ewelme until her passing in 1475. She is buried in St. Mary’s Church, Ewelme, where her magnificent tomb can still be visited today.
From May 16th to 18th, 2025, a special event will celebrate Alyce’s life and times. To provide information about the event and handle bookings, we created a dedicated website using WordPress with PayPal integration. For those unable to attend in person, virtual participation will be available via Zoom, and the website includes an attendee list that can be easily imported for this purpose.
