With sparrowhawks beginning their breeding season in early May I have found myself in dense woodland looking for the tell tale signs that may point me into the direction of an active sparrowhawk nest of late
During this particular morning, I suddenly caught out the corner of my eye, movement a bird. I dropped like a stone, look up to see this adult tawny had just perched up in a tree about 50m away. Having cover around me I quietly sat at watched this gorgeous gorgeous bird for a few minutes before decided to let her be.
As I stood up to leave I turn around find myself eye to eye with a branching tawny owl who was perched on some cover behind me. Now this is a situation I didn't want to be in, between chick and adult. So I made my exit giving them as much space as I could and as quietly as possible to continue my search for sparrowhawks.
No sparrowhawks were found, however later that day I decided to return to the area I'd seen the tawnys. This time knowing what I was walking into and being able to plan my approach accordingly and get into position without disturbing either adult or the brancher. I then sat and watched them vocalise to each other, before the adult went off to hunt as the sun started to drop. This was then my moment to leave knowing she'd be back with food to feed the eager youngster and I could be in her way on her return journey. Without knowing her habit, routines and usual routes, it was not worth the risk.
Fingers crossed they're back in the same area next year where I can learn some more about this individual! 🤞
