On a recent visit to RSPB Fairburn Ings and St Aidan's we saw lots of banded demoiselles along the riverbank trail 🏞️

This beautiful damselfly is not to be confused with the damselfly named 'beautiful demoiselle'. While difficult to see in this photo, beautiful demoiselles have practically fully coloured wings, whereas the male banded demoiselle [pictured here] only has a dark fingerprint style mark (females have translucent wings). I love the metallic green of the females and blue of the males πŸ’™

For I thought I'd take an optimistic view into the future. Whilst 1 in 6 UK species are at risk of extinction at the hands of humans, conservation efforts from people across the country can and do make a difference.

A great example can be seen with the Marsh Harrier, a spectacular bird of prey that was persecuted to almost national extinction in the 1970s. But thanks to careful reedbed management, restoration and recreation of its habitat, we now have over 500 breeding pairs in the UK.

Spring has arrived πŸ¦‹ A female orange tip butterfly visits a cuckooflower. Found in wet grasslands like at RSPB St Aidan's, the cuckooflower plays an important role of the orange tip's lifecycle. The female lays bright orange eggs on the stalk of the flower, perfect for the hungry caterpillars as their food source πŸ› Both the butterflies and the cuckooflowers are a welcomed sign of spring, the flowers getting their name from the arrival of the cuckoo - as the flower blooms, the cuckoos arrive from Africa 🐦

Did you watch the thrilling chase of the barnacle goose and the white-tailed eagle on Wild Isles? πŸͺΏπŸ¦…

πŸͺΏBarnacle geese are winter migrants who come to the UK from the colder climates of Greenland and Svalbard. As Sir David told us, the UK's comparatively warmer climate attracts more than half a million geese every winter. However, as our climate continues to change under the ever-growing pressure of global warming, this may come under threat.

πŸ¦… Our nature champions RSPB WWF and National Trust have launched the campaign in response to the nature crisis we are facing - check it out on their pages! 38 million birds have disappeared from our landscape in just 50 years. It's our job to try do something about it and Save our Wild Isles 🌍

Seeing the last bees of the year 🐝 If you're still spotting bees as we come into autumn, these are likely next year's queens πŸ‘‘ Only the new queen bees hibernate over the colder months, waiting to emerge again next spring to start her own colony 🌸

300th post and what better way to wrap up 2021 with my of the last year πŸŽ†

Once again, thanks for your continuing support and appreciation - 2021 was quite a difficult year for many of us, so I'm glad I could continue with my photography through the bad and good times. One of my new years resolutions is to make more of a conscious effort to go out with my camera and to continue with this account. Here's to hoping 2022 is a better one for us all. Take care and happy snapping! Love, Megan πŸ’™
