Caught in the moment, Winnie trotting to her dad 🐾

Often the unposed moments are the favourites, showing real connection and story. Although this photo started as a posed image with Winnie stood in the path, I caught this just as she moved and I love how she's looking up in adoration 🤍

A lovely bank holiday Monday spent at Pet's Corner in Heathfield yesterday, with my studio set up to photograph dogs! Here are a few faces who visited 🐶

It was great to meet so many beautiful dogs and their owners 🐾

If you missed out this weekend, I'll be at Paws Fun Dog Show this Sunday at Saltdean Oval Park from 11am to 3.30pm offering portraits for just £10, so why not come along, support a great cause, enter your dog into the fun show and get a portrait 📸

It's easy to think 'my dog would never do that' when all you see is the finished image and not the careful planning and patience that went into creating it.

A lot of my portfolio and the photos I share on social media only show the end result after hours of retouching, so I thought you might enjoy seeing what goes into creating some of the photos.

The reason I always suggest bringing someone with you to help us with posing, is because of this.... without two people to work with the dog (Ren), it would not have been possible to create this photograph which would make a beautiful wall art piece.

Whilst I was about 20m away, Dan supported Ren to stand on the log, staying beside her to give her confidence and hold her lead, whilst Jess holds a ball to get Ren's attention in the right direction. As soon as I captured the shot, Jess, Dan and Ren all moved out of the frame so I could grab an empty scene which allowed me to piece together this final photo.

This was one of the more complicated photos of the session, but it was super helpful to have two people working with Ren throughout the session to help position her and get her looking in various directions whilst I captured the moment. I'll always direct you and show how to get your dog into position, this is generally all very new to both you and your dog, and you don't need to know anything about dog training at all, just follow my direction and it usually works out a lot easier than you would think! Many of the photos you see online, are carefully pieced together to create artwork, and a photoshoot does involve positive reinforcement (treats) and learning.

Autumn is fast approaching... arguably the one of BEST time of year for photoshoots with beautiful colours all around!

Woodland locations make for beautiful backdrops in Autumn and the temperatures are so much better for dogs to be out and about, andddd... golden hour is so much earlier in the day giving us the most beautiful lighting!

Bookings are open for September and October sessions - to find out more about dog photography sessions, send me a message 🐾

How do I get dogs to stand like this on tree roots and similar things in the forest?

With patience, a whole lot of positive reinforcement, treats and many strange noises to grab their attention 🤣

For most dogs, this is quite an unusual task we are asking of them, why on earth would they want to stand with their front feet on top of something and then stay there when they want to explore the forest?

I always approach this with a treat in my hand, held in front of the dogs nose and luring them up to where I would like them to be. As soon as they place their feet on the tree root, they get the treat. It usually does take a few attempts, building up to them standing there for a longer distance through repetition and good timing with the reward so they can understand what we are asking. Most dogs pick this up very quickly and it always makes for a super cute photo just like this!

Do you think your dog would be confident to try something like this? Let me know in the comments!
