For the first time in five years, scientists have spotted a critically endangered white abalone in the wild off Southern California.

Once abundant along the Pacific coast, this remarkable marine snail has lost around 99% of its population due to overfishing and disease. Every sighting now represents a rare glimmer of hope for a species that was feared to be disappearing from the ocean.

Conservationists have spent years breeding white abalone and releasing them back into the wild. Discoveries like this suggest those efforts may finally be making a difference.
