⚠️ Why I Throw the "Feed Right Before Your Session" Rule Out the Window 🔥
If you’ve been scrolling through newborn photography checklists online, you have probably seen advice telling you to "Feed baby right before the session."
It sounds great on paper, for the photographer. But as someone who actually works with real, unpredictable babies, I’m here to tell you: please don't stress yourself out trying to follow this rule! And if a photographer tells you that you must, find someone else who allows time for feeding within the session itself and who actually works alongside your baby, not the other way around.
Here is the honest truth about why that strict rule doesn't work:
1. Babies don't do schedules: Newborns have their own agendas. Trying to force a perfect feed right as you're heading out the door usually just creates panic, cluster-feeding, or a massive blowout.
2. The "Milk Coma" pressure backfires: Forcing a full feed right before a stressful transition (like the car seat) often leads to an overtired, fussy baby, or a lot of spit-up during the session.
3. Most importantly to me is - YOU DON'T NEED THE STRESS!! You are already exhausted and probably running late. (Don't worry, I get it - leaving the house requires packing the kitchen sink with a newborn!) I will never pressure you to arrive exactly on the dot or make you feed your baby before you can walk through the door 🥴
How I Do Things Differently
My studio is a baby-led space. I don't force your baby into my schedule; I adapt my schedule to your baby.
I build plenty of extra time into every newborn and milestone session specifically so we can pause for comfort breaks, nappy changes, cuddles, and extra feedings whenever your baby asks for them.
If your baby gets hungry the second you walk through the door, your only job is to sit down, get comfortable, and let them feed. (We can even capture a few beautiful, intimate breastfeeding photos if you'd like, but there is zero pressure!)
A happy, relaxed parent means a happy, relaxed baby and that is how we get those beautiful, timeless photos. 💕
