Picture Perfect Pembrokeshire Images of my beautiful home county of Pembrokeshire in West Wales, UK

Born in Sierra Leone and having been lucky enough to travel extensively as a child Ruth is now living in her parents' county of birth Pembrokeshire in West Wales, UK. She is a keen photographer with an abiding love of nature and of the beauty she finds in the world around her. She considers herself blessed to be living within a coastal national park with an abundance of beautiful beaches with dram

atic cliffs and a wide variety of scenic vistas. She doesn't specialise but prefers to share the beauty she finds all around her, sometimes in the most unexpected of places.

Depending on the prevailing wind direction and the strength of our winter storms the submerged forests are now regularly becoming uncovered on a few of our beaches in Pembrokeshire each year. Last year was the first time that I saw it at Abereiddy. These trees are not petrified but are instead preserved by being in anaerobic, low oxygen conditions, when buried beneath the sand. The surface of them is soft to the touch, which is incredible seeing as they are thousands of years old. I am awestruck each time I come across them on one of our beaches.

Once you become aware of the first one and start looking more closely there are several faces to be found in this image from Abereiddy. How many can you spot?

I'm not sure why we are so attracted to lone trees as photographers but we seem to find ourselves inexorably drawn to them. They call to us. Such was the case with this one at Bosherston that immediately caught my eye, a sentinal standing guard among the reeds.
