I recently created my first image with CGI objects in it, lit to match the studio shot elements, using Daz Studio. It's been a bit of a learning curve, however I see this as a way to include things in my personal "art projects" that would otherwise by prohibitively expensive (or dangerous!) to create for real. Just like a movie production - but with a very small budget, and without the 4096 node render farm - as I only need to render one frame :)
Here's the write up of the path I followed, and what went into the final image.

Using CGI In your Images Leave a Reply Over the last couple of years, I’ve moved more towards the “digital art” end of the spectrum with my photography. I still use a lot of on-set effects such as fog, camera movement with long exposures, props/sets and dramatic lighting, however I started add...

Another frame from last weekend’s tutorial sessions with amazing model Kerry modelled for around 20 hours over the weekend in 4 1:1 tutorials with many outfit, hair and makeup changes too!

Long exposure, "shutter drag". Camera set to "bulb" shutter speed that keeps the shutter open for as long as I hold the button down. Flash heads fire at the start of the exposure, and I then move the camera around. Any continuous light in the scene then render these light streaks. The room is dark , and the only continuous light is from the two red edge lights.

There's a new post on my blog (!) giving an overview of the production process for a creative image, from the studio shoot, through the post-production work in Lightroom, Photoshop, and BorisFX Optics.

Shooting for Post-Production Leave a Reply There are many types of photography, where you really don’t want to be messing around “editing” things post-capture (I mean other than the usual tone and colour adjustments to compensate for any technical shortcoming in the camera), images where the c...

Fancy learning how to shoot in a studio with a model? How to create specific type of light and other effects? I'm teaching a series of 2 hour long, 1:1 tutorial sessions in a studio in Winsford on Sat. the 12th and Sun the 13th of Feb. As 1:1 sessions they're completely flexible on what we cover - if you've never done anything like this before, we'll start at the beginning, or if you have experience but would like to know about a specific technique or look - we'll cover that :) There are 1 or 2 slots left on both days. If you're interested, contact me via this page, or you can book directly with the organiser (and model for these workshops): https://www.facebook.com/kerry.walker.1800

Some great results with the ever-versatile Kerry Walker and Mat McMahon at Peaky Blinder’s Bar & Food Court - Liverpool shooting some period pictures. Big shout out to the venue who were incredibly helpful. We had a whole floor to play in for the afternoon, and got some great shots.

Used a lot of overhead light from an AD200 in a 24" pop-up softbox with fabric grid. Kerry and Mat took turns holding this overhead. Added a bit of fog in the room to generate some of that old time smokey bar atmosphere. I also used some smoke images from my back catalogue post-production too. Edge lights, fill lights and room lights too, with various grades of warming gel - all transported to the pedestrian-zone locked bar in my new handy-dandy equipment cart :)
