As I have practiced it, photography produces pleasure by simplicity. I see something special and show it to the camera. A picture is produced. The moment is held until someone sees it. Then it is theirs. Sam Abell

Documenting the People & Portraits Workshop with Roj Whitelock

I had such a lovely time documenting the People & Portraits workshop with photographer Roj Whitelock at Mill Tye Gallery this week.

It was inspiring to watch participants experiment with natural light portraiture, grow in confidence and share creative ideas throughout the day, all under Roj’s expert guidance.

A huge thank you to our wonderful model Maisie Lane for bringing such warmth, patience and professionalism to the session, and to Mill Tye Gallery for hosting such a brilliant creative experience in a beautiful setting overlooking the Mill pond.

Workshops like this are such a great reminder of the power of creativity, learning and community.

Thank you to everyone involved for such a lovely day.

Album 3 – Shiftless Shuffle Celebrating 25 Years of Dancefloor Jazz at the Southport Weekender | 15 March 2026

One of the things that stood out to me was the mix of people in the room — long-time Shiftless dancers alongside those experiencing it for the first time.

But once everyone was on the dancefloor, those differences disappeared.

There’s a shared understanding through movement, inspired by the music — and that’s what I’m always trying to capture.
I found myself following the energy, staying close to those in-between moments as they unfolded.

Looking back now, I can see the layers of the night,
the build, the connection, the release…
from the dancefloor to behind the booth.
Moments that pass in an instant, now held in time.

Album 2 – Shiftless Shuffle Celebrating 25 Years of Dancefloor Jazz at the Southport Weekender | 15 March 2026

One of the things I love most about photographing Shiftless Shuffle is how everything unfolds in the moment.
This session felt like a real journey — one that gently built and evolved across the afternoon into the evening.

From Gordon Klass bringing in those Latin flavours, to Perry Louis & Colin Parnell continuing the journey, and Colin Curtis lifting the roof…
You could feel the transitions, not just in the music, but in the movement and energy of the floor.

As a photographer, I’m always responding, adjusting, anticipating, trying to catch those fleeting moments where everything aligns… the music, the light, the expression, the connection.

There was a real sense of togetherness in the room.
People dancing with each other, feeding off the energy, completely present.

Capturing that flow — as it builds, shifts and peaks — is what I love most.

Album 1 - Shiftless Shuffle Celebrating 25 Years of Dancefloor Jazz at the Southport Weekender | 15 March 2026

This one felt really special to document. It was great to see Perry Louis back with us, with a legendary line-up in store. With it being the 25th anniversary, I felt both the responsibility and the privilege of trying to do it justice.

From where I stand with the camera, I’m always drawn to connection and this night was full of it. Familiar Shiftless faces, dedicated dancers, and people experiencing it for the first time at Southport… all finding a shared rhythm on the same floor.

I found myself moving between the dancefloor and behind the booth, following the energy in both spaces. Watching the DJs build on each other’s sets, responding to the room, completely immersed in the music, those moments felt just as meaningful to capture as the dancing itself.

Moments that stayed with me, long after the music ended.
Here is the first of three albums that I captured to help tell the story and keep the memory alive.

Afterwards, it stays with you.
Not just the music — but the feeling.
The moments that passed in seconds,
the energy on the floor,
the people you shared it with.
Looking back through the images, it’s those fragments that stand out.
Small pieces of something bigger.
That’s what we’re holding onto.
Each session leaves its mark.
And together, they begin to form a record — a story that builds over time.
Especially in a year like this.
25 years of Shiftless Shuffle.
And still moving.
A privilege to be there to document it.
Album Four — complete.

By this point, it’s not just about the music.
It’s about the people.
The familiar faces you see each session.
The ones who have been there from the beginning.
And those stepping into it for the first time, finding their place on the floor.
There’s something shared here.
Unspoken, but understood.
From the dancefloor, you start to recognise it, the way people move together, connect, and hold the space for each other.
Dave captures those moments of closeness, the exchanges, the expressions, the portraits that tell their own stories.
Everyone in the room is part of it.
And every face becomes part of the story we’re documenting.

Once you’re in it, everything shifts.
The music, the movement, the way people connect — it all starts to unfold in layers.

From the dancefloor, I’m drawn to those in-between moments.
The split seconds where someone closes their eyes,
gets lost in the rhythm, or connects with someone else without saying a word.

That’s where the story deepens.

Dave captures it from another angle, the exchanges, the expressions, the familiar faces and new ones finding their place in it.

Together, we’re building a picture of what this feels like from the inside. Not just a night — but something shared.
Each album reveals a little more.

Some sessions stay with you.
This was one of them.
From the moment I step onto the dancefloor, I’m not just there to photograph it, I’m there to feel it. To move with it. To understand the energy from inside the room.
That’s where the images begin.
Light, movement, connection — moments that happen in an instant and then disappear again. The kind you can’t stage. The kind you have to be present for.
Dave and I approach the photography differently, but together we’re telling the same story.
From the heart of the dancefloor to the edges of it, the energy, the closeness, the familiar faces, and those experiencing UK Dancefloor Jazz for the first time.
What we’re trying to capture is more than what it looks like.
It’s what it feels like to be there.
Each session becomes part of something bigger.
A moment in time.
A piece of living history, especially as we move through this 25th Anniversary year.
Through these images, we hope you can see it, feel it, and be part of that story.

At Just Jaq Photography, I’m always drawn to projects that capture creativity in action — and Pulling Prints has been exactly that.

As we head into the final weekend of the exhibition, I’ve been reflecting on what a special journey this has been to witness.

Pulling Prints brings together a group of emerging artists who have spent months developing their ideas through printmaking — experimenting, refining, and building confidence in their work.

Featuring Eartha Jean, Eleanor Mills, Flo Cameron, Lucy Perry, Maddy McCloskey, Mae Warner, Rowan Collinson and Solo Nichol, the exhibition is full of individuality, curiosity, and creative energy.

What’s been most powerful to observe through the lens is the process behind the work — the quiet moments of focus, the experimentation, and the sense of growth as ideas begin to take shape.

This is where the real story lives.

Projects like this are such an important reminder of what can happen when young people are given the time, space, and support to explore their creativity and find their voice.

A big thank you to Jilly Roberts at Gainsborough’s House and Peter Rumsey at Mill Tye Gallery for supporting and nurturing this journey.

If you haven’t visited yet, this weekend is your last chance to see the exhibition at Mill Tye Gallery — it’s well worth a visit.

You can find out more here:

And huge congratulations to all of the artists involved — such a fantastic achievement.

Let’s Dance at the Old Bailey

Some days as a photographer you’re not just documenting an event — you’re helping to tell a story that feels genuinely important.

I had the privilege of photographing the Let’s Dance press launch at the Old Bailey, where JazzCotech and Foot Note dancers came together for a powerful performance choreographed especially for the occasion by Perry Louis. Watching dancers fill such an iconic space with movement, connection and joy was extraordinary.

From behind the lens, what really stood out was the spirit of the wider Let’s Dance movement. Founded in 2025 by Angela Rippon, Let’s Dance brings together dance organisations, charities, health professionals, local councils, community groups, businesses, celebrities and media, all with one shared aim: to get the nation dancing.

Supported by organisations including the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the Together Coalition, the NHS and Parkinson’s UK, the mission is simple and powerful: to encourage people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to dance together, and to shine a light on the physical and mental wellbeing benefits that movement brings.

The launch was featured on BBC News and The One Show, but being there in person, witnessing the final performance slot, was something else entirely. Energising, inclusive and deeply human.
I’m sharing a small selection of photographs to help tell that story, one of movement, collaboration and wellbeing in action.

Many thanks to Perry Louis (JazzCotech) for inviting me, I’m looking forward to seeing you all dancing once more at Shiftless Shuffle this weekend.
