Across Town

We’d had the first sighting of snow for the 2025/26 winter the day before this shot was taken. Having returned from a weekend in the lakes the day before with snow falling as we arrived back we’d headed to Roseberry for the first flurry and the next day saw more of a covering so we opted to head for our local landmark of the priory. Due to the priory grounds been closed over winter we had to photograph it from outside however the back fields were filled with taller crops which made for messy compositions rather than simple snowy scenes. I therefore opted to fly my drone and get above the field ending up going for this shot with the priory standing proud in front as the drone looked across the town of snow-covered rooftops.

Mary’s Majesty

St Mary’s Lighthouse will always have a special place in my heart. Seeing the Northern Lights is a bucket list item for many that sees them heading for Norway or Iceland but instead it saw me head to St Marys and that’s where I first saw them. This shot however was taken 2 and a half years late as part of a long weekend at a nearby caravan site. Photography is an expensive hobby that’s for sure however this weekend the accommodation only cost us £99 for three nights so we certainly weren’t complaining at that. We certainly got some very mixed weather over the weekend with cloud, followed by blue skies, cloud and rain and then blue skies for our last day. This was taken just after the sun had risen on our final morning before we headed to Pablo EggsGoBao for a breakfast bao bun then back to the caravan to pack the car and head home. There really is no better start to the morning than a beautiful sunrise even though the bao bun came pretty close!

Flying Through The Golden Valley

Better late than never the Flying Scotsman came through Darnholm. Over an hour late on its second trip along the line of the day we stood, stood and stood some more waiting for it to come through. Beautiful light kept illuminating on the valley lighting up our compositions as it went, but clouds rolled in making us fear that there would be no light when the train eventually came. Thankfully however it did eventually come and so did the light as it popped through lighting up the valley with golden light hitting the dying ferns as the Scotsman came through. A bit of luck and good timing made the hour long wait worth it as everything came together in the end.

Fish Supper

A day I’ll never forget I have to admit. While not obsessed with puffins like Laura is I must admit they are beautiful seabirds. Having priced up a visit to the much closer Farne Islands and compared the cost to Skomer Island we chose the trip down to South Wales. Getting 4 and a half hours on the island compared to 1 sounded like we’d have more time than we’d ever need but believe me those hours flew by and I could’ve spent days there with these cute little creatures. Having planned the trip for June specifically to see the puffins with colourful beaks full with sand eels to feed their young pufflings it was a bucket list shot ticked off and this was one of my favourites. Despite their colourful beaks making them stand out I actually decided that the texture in this shot would work in black and white and I felt made such a dramatic photo even if that colourful beak was no more.

Through The Archway

An iconic location which must be known far and wide. While I certainly don’t take it for granted it is only a 25 minute drive for me and yet still was one I’d yet to capture a photograph worth of its beauty though not for a lack of trying. A busy location often filled with tourists taking photos of themselves, their loved ones or even their four-legged friends is quite simply a no-go for me during the busy summer months. Instead I always visit in those quieter, more peaceful winter months and even September when this image was taken is normally a little early for me too. Thankfully however this was an early morning sunrise with only dog walkers around and the rare view of a clear whalebone arch and a beautiful sunrise to enjoy. It was absolute bliss and nice to finally capture a shot of this iconic location I actually like without taking the standard photo framing the abbey within the arch.

Standing Strong

Bamburgh Castle really is a photographers paradise. You could visit hundreds of times and not come away with the same shot. With the shifting sands and varying tide heights always revealing something new its hard not to love this place. This time we visited at low tide and I was drawn to these rock shelves that had been revealed on the beach using their height to look like cliffs with the castle behind by getting my camera low to the ground and aiming along the beach towards the beautiful Bamburgh Castle.

Depth of Field

This field has featured in several of both mine and Laura’s favourite photos and knowing the farmer meant we both had permission to photograph on his land and also we even received a heads up as to when they were going to combine too! In 2024 I caught the combine with Roseberry Topping in the background which you can see titled ‘Gathering’ in the Roseberry Topping section so in 2025 I wanted to try something different. Having bought myself a drone in the January I hadn’t actually used it much due to dealing with a house move and photography having had to take a spell on the back burner but this was a perfect opportunity to capture the combine working its way through the field bringing in that year’s crop with the straight lines and contrast between harvested and un-harvested making this one of my favourite drone photos to date.

Threes A Crowd

During the NYMR’s visit from the Flying Scotsman I made a few visits to the railway to try capture some new images. A couple of weeks earlier we’d caught the loco travelling through both Goathland Station and the valley at Darnholm so this time I wanted to see something different. With it been a weekday it meant the village of Grosmont was much quieter than the weekend excursions so I could actually park nearby unlike the weekends which had seen parking wardens have a field day as people flocked to ride and photograph the iconic locomotive. Despite it been quieter I still opted for an even quieter option heading up to the engine sheds where I only saw a father and son and the railway workers / volunteers the whole time I was up there as they worked hard to get the trains up to speed ready for a busy day ahead of hauling services between Grosmont and Pickering. At this point I even managed to capture the three trains sat up at the engine sheds in one photo with the added bonus of a member of staff climbing into the cab to begin his day.

The Force of The North

When walking from the car park down towards High Force it takes you through some lovely woodland on the way which looks especially beautiful with the golden yellows and oranges during autumn. Walking along the well-trodden path and turning the corner this is your first sight of the magnificent waterfall and with the golden trees creating a natural frame and the fence adding some depth I framed this shot up. When up close to this waterfall it is apparent the sheer power of this waterfall but even upon first sight from distance its power can still be seen as well as heard as the volume of water crashes down.

Topping Treasure

Commitment is key to most things in life and photography is no different. Having wandered around the surrounding areas of Roseberry Topping all afternoon without sight of any interesting light I could very easily have packed up and gone home but ever the optimist I stuck around more in hope than expectation of some light or a nice sunset. Little did I expect what came, a 5 minute bust of light saw my photo light up as red light hit the shooting box and Roseberry but then out popped a rainbow. Unfortunately not in the frame for what I had lined up I frantically switched on my drone and took flight using it to line the end of the rainbow up with the top of the topping and capture a photo that could not have been taken without the sky camera.
