Can you help me find the Graham Family from County Durham?

I produced this very short film, less than 4 minutes long, a couple of years ago. It’s about the tragic story of Sergeant Stan Graham told by his Lieutenant, Francis Goode.

Francis was younger than Stan, but was his boss - Francis was an officer (Lieutenant) and Stan was his Sergeant - the crucial link between an officer and his men.

I filmed Francis’s life story in 2022 just after his 98th birthday and produced the final film a few months later.

Francis’s 100th birthday was in May this year. That day, he gathered all his family around him at his home in Watford - his 4 grandchildren and all their children. They had all watched the film I made, so all felt very connected with their extraordinary grandfather - a war hero, a substitute father for his fatherless Grandson, Michael (who asked me to make the film); a modest man, thoughtful and very kind.

That evening with his family around him, Frances took his leave and walked up the stairs to bed.

And then he lay down, and died.

Why Have a Filmed Memoir?

Michael Goode wanted to capture the story of his grandfather’s life for his immediate family - for all his grandfather’s children, and grandchildren, and for future generations.

He started to write a biography but realised that it wasn’t just his grandfather’s stories he wanted to capture, it was also to convey a sense of who he is, his approach to life, his motivations and his wisdom. Michael wanted others in the future, to have the same inspiration that his grandfather provided when he sat and listened to his stories as a boy.

The solution was to enable his grandfather to tell his life story in his own words and create a Filmed Memoir.

Francis Goode’s life story and the history of his family is told against the backdrop of three major wars which had significant impact on his life.

But Filmed Memoirs are not just for people who have been directly involved in historical conflicts they are for anyone who wants to leave their story for their family - to share their family history, their life experiences, their trials and tribulations and what they have learned from life for the benefit of those who follow in their footsteps.

Francis Goode is now 98 years old. When he was just 20 he landed on the Normandy Beaches, a few days after D-Day, and fought his way through France, Belgium and Holland to the heart of N**i Germany.

Throughout that period, he and his Sergeant, Stan Graham, served side-by-side, narrowly avoiding death on numerous occasions.

This short clip is an extract from a Memoirs Film project that we recently completed. It was a real honour to spend time with Francis and hear all his stories of the many stages of his life.

His earliest memories enabled us to reach back to the time of the Boer War, at the turn of the twentieth century, as Francis described his father's experiences then and subsequently when he served in World War 1.

The resulting film serves as a priceless historical record for Francis's family and future descendents.

The third clip from Lucienne's 1.5hr Memoirs Film. The challenge of being a single mother and the next step from there.

Lucienne's daughter helped her prepare for her interview based on guidance from us. They spent time together making a list of things to include in her story - which acted as a prompt list for our interviewer. Together they then selected photographs in various photograph albums which we scanned and included in their Memoirs film.

Both Lucienne and her daughter said how much they enjoyed preparing. Going through Lucienne's photos prompted memories of many more stories they were able to include in the interview.

The second clip from Lucienne's 1.5hr Memoirs Film. The tragedy of a loved one lost and a first love found.

Lucienne really enjoyed telling the story of her life. She and her family absolutely loved it when the film was complete. Her future descendants will know her too now and... consequently understand more about who they are.
