📞 When you can't get any connectivity, what do you do? 📞

We had very poor connectivity on EE at the weekend. Did anyone else struggle on this network? We've heard they have been upgrading masts so we hope that is the reason. There are a lot of campsites around the area where we were staying too. At least another three and we think they have camping at Oulton Park Circuit too. We know the Creamfields Festival was on and isn't too far away from where we were staying either.

After posting about apps last week, we struggled to access any of them. It would have been great to be able to use Rain Alarm as this weekend was very soggy at times. We did manage without it, just about. We know we could get something more reliable installed but don't really know much about it or the costs involved.

If you rely on the internet when you are away, what do you use? - NB We know about Starlink and it's expensive and not something we would ever get for a variety of reasons so we don't need to know about that! LOL 😂

‼ About our page ‼

After our post yesterday, we felt it would be a good idea to go over what our page is all about.

First and foremost, it is a diary of everything we have done and everywhere we have been since we first bought our Go Pod in October 2017. We post the things we have bought and where we have stayed. We include where we have visited whilst away and the things we have done. It can be useful to discuss problems we have experienced and how we have overcome them and, also, tweaks and changes we have made and interesting workarounds we have found.

We also discuss topics about caravans, camping, caravan parks, campsites, tourist areas, legislative changes affecting any of the above, life in general as a camper. We hope to have genuine discussions on this Page about everything but, of course, it is social media. Along with that comes a small handful of people who seek to see the worst in everything instead of being interested and joining in with the conversations.

We've been camping in one way or another for decades. Mrs CP was a Girl Guide and I was in the Cub Scouts. We've both camped with our friends as teenagers, been festival goers and done some motorbiking camping. Our first holidays together were all camping and it was only a serious accident that stopped us camping for some time until, finally, we found a Go Pod and decided to give it another go.

We are not here to post "click bait" or "rage bait" or whatever other disgusting terminology you want to give to posts that are simply posted to get some kind of reaction. We are here posting as lifelong campers, interested in the opinions of others and taking on board the collective wisdom of others whilst sharing our own experiences. Our Page is a Personal Blog and we are not here for any other reason. If you have mistaken our Page for anything else then it may not be for you. We will always delete comments and block people if comments are posted on our Page that are rude, unwarranted or nasty.

🤨 When things go wrong on a trip away 🤨

What do you do when you're at a campsite and get accused of doing something that you have not done? It's bad enough if there are two of you and it is made out you have done something wrong but we can't begin to imagine how horrible and upsetting it must be if you are on your own.

This is exactly what happened to a lady who was away on her own with her dog. She was having a night alone at a campsite and then other family were joining her. Unfortunately, the lady was accused of being up at 1.00 am on her phone, shouting and swearing, by the site owner/manager. The lady showed her phone records on her mobile which proved that she had not been on her phone after 7.00 pm but was told that five people who complained could not be wrong. The lady being accused was mortified and in tears, trying to protest her innocence but was just not listened to or believed. Her husband and children were supposed to be joining her as it was her husband's birthday that weekend but, instead, the lady had started packing her stuff away and had rang her husband in tears to explain what had happened. We're not sure what happened next but about an hour later, the site manager returned, after having checked the CCTV, and explained that she had made a mistake.

The lady was given an apology and was given the option to stay or leave with a full refund but, as you can imagine, she didn't want to stay after that. Her husband came to collect her and, as they were leaving, some of the staff made these comments, "Your wife was just caught up in a eventful storm and became the centre of it" and "I suppose we're getting slated all over social media" which is just gobsmacking really. All the upset and disappointment for this family is hard to think about. As much as people staying on site can be in the wrong, on occasions, so can Site Managers.

It's hard to imagine what you would do in a situation like this. What would you do?

🤩 A fab Bank Holiday Weekend Away 🤩

After our last Bank Holiday weekend trip away (which was a disaster) it was great to go away this time and have a fab time. We are going to post about our trip away on the last Bank Holiday weekend in May, very soon, as now seems the right time. Just not today. Stay tuned for that post.

In view of the last disaster trip, we wanted to go somewhere we knew we would get a great welcome and enjoy ourselves and we did. The weather forecast was dire but we also knew we would have a fab time irrespective and what a fab Bank Holiday Weekend away we had! We wanted to make sure we weren't cursed for Bank Holiday trips after the last one and this stay firmly ensured there was no cycle of badness started for the future.

This time, Mr CP chose The Shrewsbury Arms at Little Budworth, Cheshire, for our trip. It's not too far from home, so no taking hours to get there, it's a lovely little site so not too peopley and, also, the pub is brilliant with great food.

The weather was fine on Friday, poor on Saturday and not so good on Sunday. We set up on arrival on Friday and then went to the pub for some food. We only had the canopy to put up so not much to do at all. It only takes five minutes to put up.

On Saturday, Mr CP had a migraine so we spent most of the day just chilling out. It coincided with the bad weather anyway so it was no great loss. We played some games and Mrs CP did some crafts. We were very lazy and went to the pub again for some food‼

We missed the poor weather on Sunday when we decided on a day out in Chester. It wasn't far to get to the park and ride at Great Boughton so we drove there and got the bus to Chester and went in search of the floating market at Canalside to finally see Holly The Cafe Boat (we watched it on YouTube). We had coffee and cake sat at the side of the canal and then we had a good walk round Chester where it was lovely and warm and, apart from the odd spot of rain, there was no bad weather to speak of. We were surprised when driving back to see the road was really wet and we found a pool of water had appeared on our canopy - soon tipped off. The weather was dry for the time being so we took the canopy down and put the water container away and drained down meaning less to do the following morning. The sky clouded over and darkened and the rumbles of thunder started and it absolutely lashed it down. We didn't mind though because, as it was the last night of our trip, we were extremely naughty and went to the pub again 🤣

The weekend seemed to disappear in a flash and, the next morning, it didn't take us long to pack up to go home. It was persisting it down so we were glad we had packed the canopy away and sorted out the fresh water the previous evening. We packed away things inside and then, between showers, put things in the car and put away the electric cable and sorted out the waste water. It was only a short journey home and we did feel the trip was really beneficial to us both. We felt very chilled out after our few days away and that's priceless! We know a lot of people don't go away at Bank Holidays but, if you choose the right site, it can be a real bonus. Obviously, in May we got it wrong and this time we got it right. We will remember in future for any Bank Holiday weekends that we do decide to go away‼

This year has been really sunny and hot but rain is really needed everywhere.

How to dry towels is always something that needs working out. They are drying really well despite being hung under our soggy canopy!

⛈ The weather forecast is not amazing for the weekend and pitches are starting to become available again as people have changed their minds about going away. If you couldn't bag the site you wanted to stay at, so decided to stay at home, you just might be able to get the pitch you want now. Why not have a check to see if they've now got pitches available❓

Whatever you are doing this weekend, have a fabulous Bank Holiday‼

📶 Our favourite apps 📶

When you are trying to get away from it all for the weekend, it can be tempting to turn off the tech. Switch off the mobile and leave an iPad at home etc. If you can manage to ignore notifications (or maybe temporarily turn them off on some apps) you will find that you can turn your mobile phone into a fabulous multifunctional resource for outdoor activities. There are apps to find National Trust properties, Campsites and Temporary Holiday Sites and cafes and restaurants.

We use a variety of different apps when we are away and here are some of our favourites:-

🌧 Rain Alarm - Shows you approaching precipitation and intensity - useful for deciding whether to stall putting that awning up for half an hour so you don't get soaked;
🌊 Tide Times - Displays tide times for the day when you search for the coastal location you are visiting;
🌞 LunaSolCal - Find out sunrise and sunset times for any area - great information for those times of the year when it starts to get lighter later and darker earlier;
🐦‍Merlin - Identify birds by their calls - add them to a life list and play Bird Top Trumps (this last part is something we made up but is great fun);
📍 OS Maps - Load up maps for any location and add codes from your paper OS maps so you can take the digital version with you. Record your walks and find walking routes in places you are visiting; and
⛈ Clear Skies - Detailed weather forecasts for any location, hour by hour for today and tomorrow.

These are the main apps we use regularly. There must be some really useful apps out there that we haven't discovered yet. What apps do you use when you are away or are you firmly in the "switch off tech" camp when you are away?
