No one tells you this when you're planning a wedding for the first time...
When I talk to my clients as their wedding day approaches, I always come across this issue.
You don't allow enough time for things!
The universal truth about weddings is that time doesn't work the same way it normally does.
Things take 5x longer than it would in every day life.
- it takes you 5 minutes to get dressed? try at least 20 (no matter what you're wearing)
- 2 seconds for a group photo? give me at least 3 minutes. That's half an hour gone for 10 group variations!!
- a quick trip to the bathroom? I know I'm not going to see you for at least 15 minutes!
This is because there are a lot of factors at play for every single moment of your day, from taking photos to maneuvering in a dress, forgetting things, being sidetracked by guests who want to say hi, to even just moving a whole crowd from one space of the venue to the other.
Time is eaten away by the little things you don't consider taking any time at all, and this is where timing issues start and you need to choose between enjoying your day care free and experiencing your wedding day as a performance.
Now here's the Advice: always talk about your plans in detail with a professional (especially your photographer!) so they can help you build a realistic timeline, and think carefully about which parts of the day are most important to you.
Because you may not be able to accomplish everything within the time that you have.
And if you are adding extra elements to your day - for example fireworks, cannon displays, special entertainment, transport from one venue to another - this will also need to be taken into account.
This is a tiny mention of a massive topic that I will definitely explore in a future blog post, but in the meantime if you are needing some extra help with figuring out your wedding timeline I am always in the DMs to help. 😊
