FINDING ORDER IN A BUSY SCENE

Busy locations can feel overwhelming. People are moving, objects overlap, reflections add extra layers and there may be several possible subjects competing for attention.

The answer isn’t always to remove that complexity. Sometimes, it’s about organising it.

Look for ways to give the viewer a clear route through the photograph:

Use colour to create a focal point - A strong area of colour can hold the composition together and direct attention towards your subject.

Use reflections and frames - Windows, vehicles, doorways and architectural shapes can divide a complicated scene into smaller, more manageable sections.

Wait for the human moment - A gesture, expression or interaction can briefly become the clear centre of an otherwise crowded scene.

Separate the elements - Watch how people, trees, buildings and other shapes overlap. A small change in your position, or simply waiting another second, can create greater separation.

Decide what matters most - Even when the frame contains several layers, there should still be something that catches the eye first.

A successful photograph doesn’t have to remove every distraction or show everything perfectly. It simply needs to make the photographer’s intention clear.

Which of these four images catches your attention first, and what did you notice?

Save this for your next photography day.

The City by the Beach: Barcelona

Gothic alleyways, bold architecture, Mediterranean light and the beach just moments away.

Barcelona is a city of many photographic personalities.

In the atmospheric Barri Gòtic, narrow streets and gothic arches create wonderful opportunities to work with light, shadow and passing figures. Elsewhere, grand architecture, café life, colourful details and the city’s relaxed Mediterranean character offer an entirely different visual story.

Led by Peter Fenech, The City by the Beach is an opportunity to slow down, observe and discover Barcelona through a photographer’s eyes.

Led by Mehmet Ozbalci, this immersive photography tour has been designed to capture far more than Thailand’s famous landmarks. It is an opportunity to photograph its atmosphere, culture and people with expert guidance throughout the journey.

FINDING THE BEST LIGHT

The “best” light isn’t always golden and these five photographs show just how many opportunities different conditions can offer.

From warm directional light revealing the texture of desert dunes to storm clouds adding drama and twilight transforming a cityscape, every type of light has something different to contribute.

The key is not to wait for supposedly “perfect” conditions. It is to recognise what the available light does well and choose a subject and composition that make the most of it.

Swipe through to explore:

- Warm, directional light
- Soft, diffused light
- Twilight and artificial light
- Dramatic storm light
- Backlight and broken cloud

Light & Land tutors help photographers understand not only where to photograph, but how to observe the conditions, respond to changing light and recognise opportunities that others might overlook.

After all, photography is not simply about finding beautiful subjects. It’s about learning to see the light.

Photographs by Andy Farrer Landscape Photography, Mehmet Ozbalci and Peter Fenech.
