Contributing to this book by martine Hamilton Knight was an honour. In this visually noisy world, how can architects produce or procure imagery that stands out and conveys the right message ?
I first met Martine on a sunny day at Sunderland University in the 90s, she was shooting for BDP and I for Velfac Windows, we spotted each other carting a large format Linhof camera around campus. An unusual sight !
Fast forward 25+ years and Martine has written this incredible almanac on commissioning architectural photography.
It’s interesting that two architectural photographers, the same age, trained and set up in business at the same time, both women, both based outside London, both with a passion for the built environment, can follow quite different career paths. While we both, obviously, shoot Building Studies for architects, my area of work also includes editorial story-telling by shooting construction, places and people. Martine is pure ‘architecture’ and has become a reveered voice ; consulting, teaching and writing. Martine knows everyone and is perhaps architectural photography’s matriach ! She collaborated with other architectural photographers based in the UK, USA and Australia to make this book richer and rounder : Richard Bryant, Ron Blunt, Peter Durant, Tim Griffin, Daniel Hopkinson, Hufton and Crow and Keith Hunter. I’m honoured to be part of that architectural photography club.
Martine didn’t need much extra input from others on how to shoot architecture, but I was able to help shape text and imagery about shooting construction, how to use models in buildings and real life conundrums around ethics. Through my commissions from Nicholas Jamieson Architect and Life Kitchens, Ervia Energy’s gas pipeline in Dumfries, work at The Proud Trust in Manchester, construction at Newcastle’s Stephenson Quarter, Stockton Globe Theatre and Ad Gefrin Whisky Distillery.
Whether you’re an architect, a designer, working or just interested in the built environment or photography, this book is full of fantastic imagery and a comprehensive wealth of valuable information.
Buy it on Amazon but better still from the publisher 😉
