Well… the little Rollei works. Mostly. 😂

We got our first film back and there are photographs!

There is also a rather substantial light leak.

It would be very easy to look at this and call the experiment a failure, but that's really not how we see photography.

We've learned something.

The camera works. We like using it. We know there's a problem to investigate. And, strangely, there's something rather lovely about seeing an image emerge from an old camera even when it isn't technically perfect.

So now we get to work out where the light is getting in, fix it and try another roll.

Photography isn't always about producing a perfect photograph.

Sometimes it's simply about being curious enough to see what happens.

The Tiny Camera Adventure

The first roll is finished.

After spending years tucked away in a cupboard, the little Rollei 35 LED has now shot its first film in a very long time and we've sent it away for developing.

There's always something exciting about waiting for film to come back. No screen to check, no instant preview... just a little anticipation.

Now comes the hardest part... waiting.

We love the fact that we’re not far from the sea here at Forsinard, and as soon as we get out to the coast, there is often the influence of the ocean in the images we make.

Here’s 2 examples from the same day – same location but very different levels of scale!

We’ve been sorting through some pictures from the beginning of the year, and it’s just made me think how much I LOVE winter light!

Of course, the days are short and the weather a little less predictable but wow the light can be amazing!

Tiny camera... big personality!

I rescued this little Rollei 35 LED from the cupboard this week, gave it a careful clean and loaded a roll of film.

For anyone who hasn't seen one before, it's one of the smallest full-frame 35mm cameras ever made.

Now comes the exciting bit...
Will it still work after all these years? 🤞
We'll let you know when the film comes back!

I didn’t use to photograph people much at all, but that’s definitely changed.

If you’ve been into photography for a while, you’ll know your personal tastes in your pictures, evolves and changes over time and now I really love having people in my shots.

I tend to be opportunistic in my approach, and this shot is a great example.

We were visiting a wonderful archaeological site called Clava Cairns and it was busy with visitors. The place has a very spiritual feeling about it and lots of visitors were taking a moment to soak up the atmosphere.

Then this lovely scene appeared in front of me. The lady in blue is blind, and she was running her hands along the ancient stones of the cairns. As she was guided along, she had a wonderful calm smile on her face and was obviously deeply connecting with the place.

To be honest, there’s nothing special about the photo, but there is something special about the moment.

It’s those 2 raw ingredients of photograph again - light and time. On this occasion it was that moment that makes the picture mean something.

Sometimes grey skies can give some beautiful colours.

These 2 shots were from a few months back when we visited a favourite spot on an overcast day. The rich colours in the water contrasted so well with the brightly coloured boats, and I liked the somewhat abstract compositions.

They say photography has 2 basic raw ingredients, light and time. The right moment in the right light can make a picture.

We have a cool photo challenge for July on our Patreon group – ‘SHADOWS’.

If you stop and think about it, one of the absolutely basic requirements of photography is light. And where light doesn’t fall, we have shadows. Light & dark – there’s just something really fundamental in that which is so appealing.

Obviously strong, bright, directional light, like we get on a hot summer’s day, creates very stark and strong shadows, which can be so interesting as a subject or element in our compositions.

Thinking about shadows is a great way of making this strong light work for you and we really like that idea.

Everyone imagines photography is about finding spectacular views.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it's a rusty old harbour bollard.

We popped over to Portskerra this week with one simple aim... to look for shadows.

It's amazing what you notice when you give yourself one small creative challenge. Instead of asking "What's worth photographing?" we asked...

"Where is the light?"

The answer was everywhere.

That's one of the biggest lessons we try to share with our guests. Great photographs don't always come from great places. They come from curiosity.
