The Wild Arena business was founded in 2003, by David Southard and supported by a small group of experienced professionals with a long-standing background in the photography and animal industries. The whole team have a passion for photography, animals and passing on our knowledge to inspire other photographers. Our aim is to provide workshops and tours, which guests will enjoy so much, they will want to come back again.

Have you ever asked yourself, ‘why is a black & white photograph different to a colour one’?

Well, if you have, one of the answers might be, that making an image in monochrome allows the photographer to remove one element of their subject ‘as we see it’, simply by removing the colour. By doing this, the result might be one step further away from reality and closer to an expressive response to what we have seen.

NEW – MASTERING FILTERS WORKSHOP, 06/10/26

There was a time when every photographer would have had filters in their kit bags, but the advent of digital photography software has led some people to feel they are redundant in the world of modern photography.

However, this is something we strongly believe is not the case and filters form a key part of our photography. This one-day workshop aims to tell delegates everything they need to know about making filters work for you, even in the digital world.

With demonstrations of the practical use of 4 ‘key’ filter types, and some great shooting subjects too, this small group, fun workshop is the perfect way to master filters for your photography!

Flash is one of those areas of photography practice that is often thought about, but frequently poorly understood. We’ve being using flash professionally for many decades and it’s a staple in our core of techniques. During this one-day workshop, we’ll draw on our experience to give you the chance to make flask a part of your shooting toolkit too, focusing especially on the complex area of using flask outdoors.

NEW – STROMNESS ADVENTURE PHOTO WALK, 26/09/26!

We’ve talked about our series of new PHOTO WALKS and this one is crazy! We’re aiming for all the usually fun of exploring new places and finding unexpected pictures, but this time we’re moving ‘off shore’!

We absolutely love the beautiful and historic village of Stromness, and the days’ itinerary is based around the Scrabster ferry timings, so it’s easy to pop over for the day from the mainland and enjoy something fresh to photograph.

Travelling a distance and need accommodation for the night before? Let us know and we can arrange an overnight stay at Forsinard Lodge!

NEW – DUNNET BAY PHOTO WALK, 25/07/26!

There’s something really lovely about just going for a walk with your camera. Travelling light, exploring new places and finding unexpected pictures is so much fun, BUT it’s even better if you’re with knowledgeable and like-minded fellow photographers!

We recently launched a series of PHOTO WALKS, at various locations in the Scottish Far north.

We are starting with a DUNNET BAY PHOTO WALK on Saturday July 25th.

It doesn’t matter if you’re experienced or just getting starting, why not come along to meet some people, enjoy the walk, shoot some pictures and maybe learn something new!
