OMG look at the green!! That's the auroral oval. And it's incredibly low.

It normally sits much further north over Iceland or Tromsรธ in northern Norway for example.

If it was winter here, you'd be able to see the Aurora directly overhead rather than on the northern horizon.

Anyway, if these stats can hold until it's dark enough tonight, then there's a possibility we will be able to see something.

Dark enough tonight between midnight and 2am, although the large moon will scupper things a bit. Good luck if you're out and about!

Update ~ 12:20

X-flare in progress...

Finally ๐Ÿ’ฅ

After what seems like an age of very significant activity, sunspot 4455 has spurted into life producing some large M-class solar flares.

About 02:30 this morning, it produced an M9 flare - almost an X flare along with an M7.7 flare at around 08:00.

The earlier and slightly stronger flare has produced a faint CME that should hit earth on June 5th.

The problem at this time of year is it's never properly dark ๐ŸŒš and we'll also have a 75% moon ๐ŸŒ™ which won't help.

There will only be a small window of opportunity.

But anyway, fingers crossed and let's hope for a hit during night time hours!

Stay tuned for updates ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

It could be a Good Friday aurora wise!

Solar wind is high, and it's possible we've been clipped by a filament erupting from the sun, or less likely in my opinion a delayed CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) from 1st April.

Regardless, aurora is likely to be visible on camera tonight from around 21:00 onwards.
Unfortunately an almost full moon ๐ŸŒ rises just before 22:00, so there's about a 1 hour window for the best chance of some decent photography ๐Ÿ“ท.

Clearer skies are forecast tonight, more so towards the East of our region.

Good luck if you're out.
