Sometimes you can have a really quiet morning when you see nothing at a few different locations and then one thing happens that changes everything and you realise its always worth getting up at 3.30am and going out.

This Goshawk appeared from nowhere whilst I was sat at one of the hides at Blashford lakes nature reserve, piled into some undergrowth on a small island and plucked itself out a Magpie, I wonder what it was thinking whilst it was getting whisked away in the talons of this awesome killing machine.

A beautiful adult male Marsh Harrier quartering over local fields, in 1971 these birds had declined to just one single breeding female, but after conservation efforts their numbers have now reached a staggering 5-600 breeding pairs across the UK.

Normally a very skittish bird, laying down on a shallow bed of gravel behind some reeds and other vegetation this little Moorhen came to within 6 meters from me, good field craft is often the key to getting up close and personal with your subjects.
