And the last Masterclass finally ends...

What a wonderful bunch of students. This was the 11th and last of my one-year Masterclass groups. What an extraordinary few years it has been. What a privilege it has been to teach so many eager and passionate photographers.

A genuine end of an era.

Had a wonderful time in London yesterday with members of my private tuition group (Focus Ring).

The day was the culmination of several weeks together developing their Black & White skills. Days like this are immensely valuable to everyone, not just because of the skills development - but also the fun and camaraderie and of course... the peer bonding.

The plans are that this will be a small  group environment where Photography can be discussed and enjoyed without committee, competitions or critique.

A bit like how artists meet up in Drink and Draw groups, where they become friends, and the social interaction is as important as the Art.

A rare workshop... and the first since my semi-retirement.

When I announced earlier this year that I was moving into semi-retirement and reducing my teaching to just three days a week, I said I'd still try to squeeze in the occasional workshop when time allowed.

Well... here's the first one.

I'm delighted to announce a brand-new one-day workshop called Take Control of Your Camera, taking place on Saturday 12th September at Fleet Library.

This workshop isn't for complete beginners. It's for photographers who already understand the basics of their camera but feel they've reached a plateau. Perhaps you've watched countless YouTube videos, read books and magazines, and know what most of the controls do... yet you still don't always achieve the photographs you had in mind.

The workshop is built around a simple idea: the camera should never get in the way of your creativity. The more instinctive operating your camera becomes, the more freedom your mind has to observe, anticipate and create.

If you've reached the stage where your photography feels as though it has stagnated, and you know there's another level you simply haven't reached yet, I genuinely believe you'll find this day both enjoyable and transformative.

As I promised when I announced my semi-retirement, I'm also keeping my workshop prices as affordable as I can. There was a time when my one-day workshops were typically priced much closer to £300. This workshop is just £125 because I'd much rather see keen photographers investing in their skills than being put off by the cost.

To keep the workshop personal and interactive, there are just 12 places available. Given that I'll only be running workshops occasionally from now on, I fully expect those places to be snapped up quite quickly.

Most photographers know what the controls of their camera do. Far fewer know how to combine those controls instinctively to create the photographs they're hoping to capture.

Today Hampshire School of Photography celebrates its 10th birthday.

The school wasn’t something I’d planned for years. In fact, it grew quite naturally.

After moving to Fleet, I began running the occasional photography workshop. Word spread, attendance grew, and before long it became obvious there was a real appetite locally for practical, down-to-earth photography training. It simply reached the point where it made sense to create Hampshire School of Photography and give all that teaching a proper home.

By then I’d spent almost fifty years behind a camera. During those decades I’d made plenty of mistakes, learned countless lessons and gained experience that can only come from years of actually taking photographs. It seemed a shame to keep all that knowledge to myself when I could help others shortcut much of that journey and enjoy photography sooner.

Over the past ten years I’ve had the privilege of teaching hundreds of photographers. Some have joined me for a single workshop, others have stayed with me for years through Masterclasses, mentoring, Lens Hub and Focus Ring. Many have become good friends, and seeing their confidence, creativity and enjoyment of photography grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of my own photographic journey.

To every student, supporter and friend who has been part of Hampshire School of Photography…
