Someone recently asked me what they were allowed to do with a photo I took of them. This is something of an answer to that along with a mission statement.
I am not a professional photographer. Taking pictures is a hobby of mine and I'm not in it for the money.
The pictures I take are intended, first and foremost, to be reminders of (hopefully) happy events and a way to share those events with others.
I also take pictures to promote LARPs. You'll see that the more recent albums here will generally have links to places such as a Facebook Group for the game or a place where you can download the game briefings.
So some general DOs (all are optional!) and DON'Ts:
DO tell me if there's a problem with a picture that you're in. I'm unlikely to reject a correction to a caption or request to remove an image of you that you don't want to be public.
DON'T use the pictures commercially without talking to me first. I'm not against commercial use, but I do want to get the subject's permission before agreeing to it. While I said I'm not in it for the money, if you're making money from it then an image use fee is not unreasonable… but I'll probably ask you to donate it to a charity of my choice.
DO ask me if you want higher quality versions of the pictures. The resolution gets dropped a fair bit for Facebook and Tumblr. Also ask if you want uncropped versions or alternative shots that I didn't post.
DO share it freely. Credit is nice though. Links back to the original are appreciated. Photos are marked as "Public" so a Facebook share should link back automatically.
DON'T be mean. Adding personal attacks isn't cool.
DO use pictures of yourself as profile pictures.
DO pretty much whatever you like as personal use. (I ran a game which called for a portrait of a player character's ancestor as a prop. Earlier that year I had taken some cosplay photos of that player. I pushed one of them through an oil painting filter and used an online photo printing service to put it on canvas. The painting then appeared in the game… before being taken home by the player for display. I think this sort of thing is very cool and encourage you to use my pictures for that sort of thing and then to tell me about it.)
DO use my pictures to promote sequels to a game, at least if they are non-commercial. (If you're charging money beyond covering your costs for an event, talk to me first.)
If I'm coming to a game you're running: DO ask me to bring my camera. If you can help me identify who is in all the photos afterwards, that would be great. If you have a website or a page that people can use to find out about other LARPs you are running, then tell me about it so I can mention it in a caption.
